Tue Mar 1820:39Rangers Place Jon Gray On 60-Day Injured List
The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Jon Gray (forearm) on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday with a right-forearm fracture to make room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Patrick Corbin, who was signed to a one-year major-league contract. Gray took a line drive off his forearm/wrist in his last Cactus League start against the San Diego Padres and unfortunately suffered a fractured arm, which will now keep him out until at least late May. With left-hander Cody Bradford (elbow) also set to open the 2025 regular season on the injured list, it's looking more and more like both right-handed pitching prospects Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker will open the year in Texas' Opening Day starting rotation. When Gray recovers from his forearm fracture and is eligible to rejoin the team, there's a chance he's moved to a relief role, depending on the health and performance of the rest of the rotation.

Sat Mar 1513:06Jon Gray Has A Fractured Right Wrist
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said on Saturday that right-hander Jon Gray (wrist) suffered a fractured right wrist when he was hit by a line drive during his Cactus League outing on Friday night versus the San Diego Padres. "Not good news," Bochy said. The Rangers haven't given a timetable on when Gray might be able to return and make his 2025 debut, but it will obviously be a lengthy absence and could sideline the 33-year-old veteran hurler for the first several months of the season. With left-hander Cody Bradford (elbow) also set to start the year on the injured list, it's looking like both right-handed pitching prospects Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker will now open in the Rangers' starting rotation. Given his inconsistency and notable drop in velocity and strikeouts a year ago, Gray already was a starting pitcher to avoid in shallow mixed fantasy leagues.UPDATE: Gray will miss "extended time" and won't throw for at least six weeks, according to general manager Chris Young.

Fri Mar 1423:57Jon Gray Leaves Game Friday After Being Hit By Comebacker
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray (arm, hand, wrist) left his Cactus League outing on Friday night against the San Diego Padres after being hit in the right arm/hand/wrist area by a comebacker. There hasn't been word on the exact nature of Gray's injury, so stay tuned for an update on Saturday morning. The 33-year-old veteran will most likely be undergoing X-rays and possibly even a CT scan to see if he has any broken bones after taking the line drive. The former first-rounder by the Colorado Rockies in 2013 out of the University of Oklahoma was originally mentioned as a possible reliever for the Rangers in 2025, but he has been stretched out as a starter this spring and should open the year in the rotation as long as the injury he suffered on Friday night isn't serious. Gray has been too inconsistent for our liking from a fantasy standpoint in Texas, and it wasn't a good sign that his strikeout rate dipped below 20% in 2024.

Mon Mar 317:25Jon Gray Adds Velocity In Second Spring Start
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray tossed three scoreless innings in a Cactus League game on Sunday in his second spring start against the Arizona Diamondbacks and was working to stay "tall" on the mound, according to the Dallas Morning News' Shawn McFarland. Gray was focused on keeping his right leg straight when he lifted his leg in the delivery process, and it resulted in an average fastball velocity of 94.4 mph after he averaged 93.7 mph with his heater in his spring debut. The 33-year-old allowed four hits on Sunday but also struck out two in his three scoreless frames. The Rangers mentioned Gray as a potential option to pitch in the back end of the bullpen this year, but for now, he's being stretched out as a starter and should open the 2025 campaign in the rotation. RotoBaller has him ranked outside of the top-100 fantasy starting pitchers.

Sun Feb 1613:14Jon Gray To Remain In Starting Rotation For Now
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray has been rumored to be possibly moving to the bullpen. The rumor is that the Rangers could use Gray as a closer given his success out of the bullpen in the past. Gray has been fantastic in a small sample size out of the bullpen, but that doesn't appear to be the plan right now. Gray is open to the idea, but he said no one has approached him with the possibility of transitioning to the bullpen. That being said, Gray will continue to work as a starting pitcher until further notice. Gray posted a 4.47 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 86/28 K/BB ratio across 23 games (19 starts) with the Rangers last season. He has been a viable option in the rotation over the last three years for the Rangers. For now, fantasy managers can assume Gray will start the year in the rotation, but plans could change down the road.

Thu Feb 1314:49Jon Gray Throws First Bullpen Session On Thursday
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray (foot) threw his first bullpen session of spring training on Thursday. A neuroma in Gray's foot caused him to finish last year on the injured list, but by all accounts, he had a normal offseason and should be a full-go for spring training. The 33-year-old veteran appeared in 23 games (19 starts) in 2024 in his third year in Texas, going 5-6 with a 4.47 ERA (3.70 FIP), 1.31 WHIP, 86 strikeouts and 28 walks in 102 2/3 innings pitched. The Rangers lost both relief pitchers Kirby Yates, David Robertson and Jose Leclerc to free agency in the offseason, and they've mentioned Gray as a potential closing option in 2025, which would drastically affect his fantasy value. Even if Gray sticks as a starter, he should be ranked outside the top-100 fantasy starting pitchers after his strikeout rate dropped below 20% for the first time in his career.

Mon Feb 1015:25Jon Gray Could Be Used As A Closer
The Texas Rangers have had internal discussions about using right-hander Jon Gray in a closing role in 2025, according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant. Last year's primary closer Kirby Yates signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency this offseason, and Jose Leclerc also left to join the Athletics, leaving the Rangers without an established arm to deploy in the ninth inning. Right now, Chris Martin is probably the favorite for most of the save opportunities, but Gray could be another option and has said he'd be open to the idea of becoming a reliever. The 33-year-old will remain stretched out as a starter in spring training, but don't be surprised if the Rangers move him to the bullpen if Martin struggles early on. Gray threw only 102 2/3 innings in 2024 due to groin and foot injuries, his fewest in a full season since his rookie year in 2015, so moving him to relief would also allow Texas to limit his innings.

Tue Sep 3 202421:02Jon Gray's Season Is Over
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray (foot) will miss the rest of the 2024 season due to a neuroma in his foot. Gray was scheduled to start at Globe Life Field on Thursday against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels, but that assignment could now go to right-hander Jose Urena. The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. The 32-year-old veteran will finish his third year in Texas with a disappointing 5-6 record, 4.47 ERA (3.71 FIP), a 1.31 WHIP, 86 strikeouts (his fewest since the shortened 2020 season) and 28 walks in 102 2/3 innings over 23 appearances (19 starts). Fantasy managers were expecting more out of Gray ever since he left hitter-friendly Coors Field. In his three years with the Rangers, he's posted a 4.16 ERA (4.05 FIP) with a 1.24 WHIP, 362 strikeouts and 121 walks in 387 1/3 innings. Injuries got in the way in 2024.

Tue Aug 20 202412:19Jon Gray Could Return On Tuesday
The Texas Rangers are hoping to activate right-hander Jon Gray (groin) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. It's unclear when Gray will make his first start off the IL, but it's possible that he could pitch out of the bullpen as early as Tuesday at Globe Life Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 32-year-old veteran has been sidelined with a strained right groin since late July and did not go on a minor-league rehab assignment, so we won't be recommending him as a fantasy streamer right away. In 20 appearances (17 starts) this year, he's gone 5-4 with a 3.73 ERA (3.34 FIP), a 1.25 WHIP and a 78:23 K:BB in 94 innings pitched. It's very possible that Gray could just be a rotation placeholder for the Ranger until one of Max Scherzer (shoulder) or Jacob deGrom (elbow) are ready to rejoin the big-league pitching staff.

Sat Aug 17 202419:07Jon Gray Will Avoid Rehab Assignment
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (groin) will not need to embark on a rehab assignment before returning to the big leagues according to Texas skipper Bruce Bochy. Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reported that the right-hander speculated that he might make a relief appearance before making his first start. Gray has been on the 15-day injured list since July 29 with a right groin strain. This is a great sign, as Gray seems to be recovering quite well and should be ready to take on an expected workload shortly after he returns. Prior to the injury, Gray posted a 3.72 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 23:78 BB:K ratio through 94 innings of work this season. Once the 32-year-old returns to the rotation, fantasy managers should expect Jose Urena to shift to a bullpen role.

Wed Aug 14 202420:07Jon Gray Throws Bullpen On Wednesday
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that right-hander Jon Gray (groin) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday. It's the first time that Gray has been able to throw off a mound since he suffered a strained right groin in late July. The 32-year-old veteran could need another bullpen session before moving to live batting practice or a minor-league rehab assignment. With the Rangers well out of playoff contention, don't expect the defending World Series champions to rush him back, so we probably won't see Gray again in the big leagues until September. Gray has disappointed fantasy managers with a weak 19.8% strikeout rate, although he has posted a career-low 5.8% walk rate in his 20 outings (17 starts). Gray will eventually return to a 5-4 record, 3.73 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP with 78 strikeouts and 23 walks in 94 innings in 2024.

Wed Jul 31 202414:30Jon Gray Expected To Miss Around A Month
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray (groin) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday amid a flurry of roster moves, and manager Bruce Bochy said that he expects Gray to miss around a month as he recovers from a right-groin strain. Gray exited his start in Toronto on Sunday before even throwing a pitch. He initially tweaked his groin during his pre-game bullpen session but decided to pitch through it until the pain worsened. It's unclear who will take Gray's spot in the starting rotation in Texas. Until Tyler Mahle (elbow) and Jacob deGrom (elbow) become options, it could be one of Dane Dunning, Cody Bradford or Jose Urena. Gray is sporting a weak 19.8% strikeout rate in 2024 but has been solid as a backend rotation option in deep mixed fantasy leagues with a 3.73 ERA (3.34 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP in his 20 outings (17 starts) over 94 innings in his third year in Texas.

Mon Jul 29 202418:51Jon Gray Placed On 15-Day Injured List
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (groin) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday. This news comes a day after Gray was pulled while warming up for his start on Sunday. The organization will give Gray a few weeks off while he recovers from a right groin strain. Dane Dunning figures to take over the vacant spot in the rotation. However, it's worth noting that left-hander Cody Bradford (back) was activated off the injured list on Monday. The Rangers could go multiple ways with this so fantasy managers will need to check back for another update.

Sun Jul 28 202414:25Jon Gray Pulled From Sunday’s Game
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (undisclosed) was pulled from Sunday's game, according to Shawn McFarland. The training staff went to check on the presumptive starter during warmups and eventually took him off the field before he even threw a pitch. Gray logged a season-high seven innings of work in his last start against the Chicago White Sox. Overall, the 32-year-old has held a modest 3.73 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 94 frames this season. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to any updates on the right-hander after Sunday's game. If he were to miss a turn in the rotation, Jose Urena would be a strong candidate to make a spot start.UPDATE: Gray left Sunday's start with right-groin discomfort and will continue to be evaluated. He spent two weeks on the injured list in May-June with a right-groin strain, so he could be headed back to the IL.

Fri Jun 28 202412:08Jon Gray Roughed Up By Orioles
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray didn't have it on Thursday in his outing at Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles, as he gave up eight earned runs on nine hits (two home runs) while walking one and striking out only one in five innings of work to fall to 3-4 on the year. The poor outing dropped his season ERA to 3.77 and his WHIP to 1.28 in 16 total appearances (14 starts) covering 76 1/3 innings. Gray now has two terrible performances -- he gave up a season-high nine earned runs in just three innings against the New York Mets on June 17 -- in his last three outings, with a six-inning shutout in between on June 22 against the Kansas City Royals. Coming into the month of June, Gray had an ERA below 3.00, but he's struggled this month and will be a shaky fantasy play his next time out for the Rangers.

Fri Jun 21 202422:44Jon Gray Moved Up To Start On Saturday
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray will be moved up to make his next start on Saturday against the visiting Kansas City Royals, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Right-hander Max Scherzer (back, thumb) was supposed to make his 2024 debut on Saturday, but the Rangers have decided to push him back as a precaution to give him at least another day. Gray was originally slated to make his next start on Monday in Milwaukee against the Brewers on seven days of rest. The 32-year-old veteran was hit hard his last time out on Monday against the Mets, giving up a season-high nine earned runs on 11 hits (two homers) while walking none with two punchouts in just three innings. Gray allowed only one earned run in his two previous starts, but he hasn't gone over three innings in any of his three starts since returning from the injured list and will have another tough matchup against KC.

Mon Jun 3 202412:15Jon Gray To Face Live Hitters On Monday
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray (groin) is scheduled to face live hitters on Monday. Gray wasn't expected to miss much more than the minimum 15 days on the injured list after leaving his most recent start against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 21 and then being placed on the IL two days later. Before getting hurt, Gray had a stellar 2.21 ERA through the first two months of the season to go along with a 1.19 WHIP and 56 strikeouts in 57 innings over his first 11 appearances (10 starts). The 32-year-old's injury obviously isn't considered too serious, so if he gets through Monday's session without any issues, he could be a candidate to come off the IL to start against the San Francisco Giants this Friday. If Gray is for some reason on your league's waiver wire, scoop him up now.

Sat May 25 202413:45Jon Gray Expected To Return After Minimum IL Stint
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (groin) is expected to return shortly after his minimum stint on the 15-day injured list. Gray left his most recent start on May 21 against Philadelphia with a groin strain. The 32-year-old performed quite well through his first ten starts with a 2.21 ERA and 1.19 WHIP and tallied 56 punchouts in 57 innings. Gray currently sports an above-average 44.8% ground ball rate and 7.4% barrel rate, which suggests that his strong start to the season could be sustainable. Gray is rostered in 54% of all Yahoo leagues and is worth adding if available in your league, as he should continue to provide stable ratios and solid strikeout numbers over the course of the season.

Thu May 23 202412:17Jon Gray Heads To The Injured List
Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a mild groin strain after it was apparent that he wasn't going to be able to make his next scheduled start for the team. Gray injured his groin during his start on Tuesday in the loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, and now he'll have to sit out for at least the next two weeks after an MRI exam revealed a strain in his groin. We'll keep tabs on the 32-year-old's recovery process as he tries to make it back to the Rangers' rotation when he's eligible. Fantasy managers should look to keep Gray stashed on their rosters after he went 2-2 with a strong 2.21 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 56 strikeouts in 57 innings over 11 outings this year. It's unclear who will take Gray's next turn in the rotation, which comes up on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, but Nathan Eovaldi (groin) could be an option coming off the injured list.

Wed May 22 202408:48Jon Gray Set To Undergo MRI
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (groin) will undergo an MRI after being removed early from Tuesday's start with a right-groin injury. The veteran tossed five innings on 75 pitches before being pulled from the game. Manager Bruce Bochy said that Gray was experiencing tightness in his right groin and it wasn't worth it to keep pushing Gray and potentially injure him more. It seems like the move to remove Gray was more of a precaution than anything, but his MRI will determine the true extent of his injury. Bochy expect Gray to be able to make his next start versus the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. If Gray does miss time, Jack Leiter would be an option for a spot start.
