Tue Apr 2212:30Joe Boyle Named International League Pitcher Of The Week
Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle has continued to impress at Triple-A Durham and was named International League Pitcher of the Week. On April 19, Boyle tossed six no-hit innings en route to earning his first victory of the season against Scranton. In this outing, Boyle struck out seven batters and served up just two walks. Through three total outings (14 innings), Boyle has struck out 17 batters and held a 1.29 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP. Boyle was given a look in the majors on April 13 and performed very well as he tossed five innings of two-run ball (zero earned) against the Atlanta Braves. Boyle is a name to monitor in deeper formats as the Rays may opt to give the 25-year-old an extended look in the majors if he continues to flash high strikeout upside at Triple-A.

Mon Apr 1418:51Eric Orze Promoted, Joe Boyle Optioned
The Tampa Bay Rays have promoted right-handed pitcher Eric Orze from Triple-A Durham on Monday. In a corresponding move, the Rays optioned right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle to Triple-A. Orze has been effective in the Durham bullpen and has been rewarded with a promotion. Through six innings of work, Orze allowed just one run and struck out nine batters without allowing a free pass. Last summer, Orze received a brief taste of the majors and allowed four runs across one 2/3 innings of work. Boyle was given a spot-start on Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Braves and looked sharp as he tossed five innings of two-run ball (zero earned runs). He struck out seven batters. Fantasy managers should expect Orze to be deployed primarily in a middle-relief role out of the bullpen.

Sun Apr 1311:07Joe Boyle Starting On Sunday
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Joe Boyle will get the spot start on Sunday afternoon when they conclude a series against the Atlanta Braves. Shane Baz was initially expected to get the nod in this matchup, but Boyle will get the start instead. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times noted that this lineup change is not injury-related. Fantasy managers should expect Baz to get the nod on Monday when the Rays face the Boston Red Sox. Boyle has spent the early part of the 2025 campaign with Triple-A Durham. Across eight innings with Durham, Boyle has posted a 2.25 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP. He has struck out 10 batters and served up six free passes. Last season in Oakland, Boyle held a high 6.42 ERA with a 1.72 WHIP across 47 2/3 innings of work. He should be viewed as a high-risk play in DFS this afternoon, facing the Atlanta Braves.

Sat Dec 14 202413:07Rays Land Joe Boyle In Trade With A's
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-handers Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, outfielder Will Simpson and a compensation Round A draft pick from the Athletics on Saturday in exchange for left-hander Jeffrey Springs, according to sources. Boyle is the biggest piece headed back to Tampa. The 25-year-old had a 1.69 ERA in three starts in Oakland in his debut in 2023, but he wasn't as effective in 13 outings (10 starts) this past season, going 3-6 with a bloated 6.42 ERA (4.68 FIP), 1.72 WHIP and 56:40 K:BB in his 47 2/3 innings pitched in the big leagues. It didn't help he missed a month with a lower-back injury. Given the Rays' history with pitchers, Boyle could still be something special, but he won't be guaranteed to make the club's Opening Day roster out of spring training.

Wed Sep 4 202418:20Joe Boyle Optioned To Triple-A, Scott Alexander Activated
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Joe Boyle was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the Athletics activated Scott Alexander (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list. Since rejoining the Athletics in mid-August, Boyle has posted a hefty 7.04 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP across four starts while holding a 13:20 BB:K ratio. Alexander will likely return to his typical bullpen role, where he performed quite well before hitting the IL. In his past ten outings, the southpaw allowed just one earned run with a 4:11 BB:K ratio. Fantasy managers should expect J.T. Ginn to continue to hold the final spot in the Oakland rotation going forward, while Alexander should serve as a high-leverage set-up man for closer Mason Miller.

Tue Aug 20 202409:16Joe Boyle Earns Third Win
Oakland Athletics pitcher Joe Boyle allowed two hits over six innings in Monday's 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out six. Boyle improved his record to 3-5 while walking three during his 104-pitch effort in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. Monday matched his longest outing of the season, going six innings in an April 19 loss at the Cleveland Guardians. Boyle lowered his ERA to 6.21 and has a 1.47 WHIP over 37 2/3 innings while striking out 41 and walking 29. Fantasy managers will consider Boyle a risky start on Saturday when he faces a more imposing lineup in the Milwaukee Brewers.

Tue Aug 13 202415:22Joe Boyle Recalled And Starting Against Mets
The Oakland Athletics recalled right-hander Joe Boyle from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday and designated right-hander Kyle Muller for assignment in a corresponding move. Boyle, who struggled to a 7.16 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in seven starts earlier this year at the big-league level, will make the start on Tuesday versus the hosting New York Mets at Citi Field. The 24-year-old will be making his first start for the A's since May 5, and while he had been better of late in the minors, he was sporting a 5.63 ERA for the Aviators in 38 1/3 innings on the farm. He's going to need to show much better command of his pitches to stay in Oakland's rotation moving forward, as he's walked a total of 57 batters in 66 innings this year in the majors and minors. Needless to say, we don't recommend streaming Boyle on Tuesday in New York.

Fri May 31 202413:02Joe Boyle Allows Four Runs In Second Rehab Start
Oakland Athletics right-hander Joe Boyle (back) allowed four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three in 2 1/3 innings in his second minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. He threw 25 of his 43 pitches for strikes and averaged 100.1 mph with his four-seam fastball, which he threw 28 times. Manager Mark Kotsay said that Boyle feels like he has "turned a corner" with his back injury, which put him on the 15-day injured list on May 6. The 24-year-old didn't even record an out in his first rehab start last week, so Wednesday's outing was definitely an improvement. The A's are probably going to have Boyle make another rehab start or two, but the hard-throwing right-hander is nearing a return. Boyle had struggled in seven starts before his back injury cropped up, posting a 7.16 ERA and 1.73 WHIP with 29 K's and 23 walks in 27 2/3 innings for the A's.

Fri May 24 202414:30Joe Boyle Can't Escape First Inning In Rehab Start
Things could have gone better for Oakland Athletics right-hander Joe Boyle (back) in his minor-league rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Las Vegas. Boyle was unable to record a single out in the outing, allowing three hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out none to take the loss against Triple-A Tacoma. The 24-year-old threw only 26 pitches, with only half going for strikes. Boyle didn't encounter any setbacks with his back, but he's going to need to show more efficiency in another rehab start before he's an option to return to the big-league roster. He wasn't very good in seven starts (27 2/3 innings) with the A's this year before landing on the injured list, either, going 2-5 with a 7.16 ERA and 1.73 WHIP with 23 walks and 29 strikeouts. Control has been a real issue, as his four wild pitches lead the league.

Mon May 6 202422:49Joe Boyle Placed On 15-Day Injured List
The Oakland Athletics placed right-hander Joe Boyle (back) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a lower-back strain and recalled left-hander Hogan Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Boyle heads to the shelf a day after giving up four runs while walking three in an inning to take his fifth loss of the season on Sunday versus the Miami Marlins. The poor outing dropped the 24-year-old to 2-5 on the year with a 7.16 ERA (5.07 FIP) and 1.73 WHIP with a league-leading 23 walks and 29 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings over his first seven starts. It's unclear who will replace Boyle in Oakland's starting rotation, but it could be Mitch Spence after he tossed 4 2/3 innings in relief of Boyle on Sunday after he left with his back injury.

Tue Mar 26 202419:37Joe Boyle Earns Final Rotation Spot With A's
Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told right-hander Joe Boyle that he will be the team's fifth starter to open the season behind Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, JP Sears and Paul Blackburn. Boyle will throw in Arizona against Double-A hitters on Wednesday as his final tune-up before making just his fourth major-league start. In his first three MLB starts with Oakland last year, Boyle allowed just four runs (three earned) on eight hits (one homer) while walking five and striking out 15 in 16 innings pitched. The 24-year-old has a history of wildness, though, as evidenced by his 15 walks in 18 1/3 Cactus League innings this spring. The 6-foot-7 hurler throws gas but will need to command it in order to have success and remain in Oakland's rotation for the long haul. At best, he's a waiver-wire pickup in AL-only leagues.
