Pittsburgh Pirates Gold Glove utility infielder Jared Triolo (back), who has been out since April 7 with a lumbar spine strain, will head to Triple-A Indianapolis for a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Kevin Gorman. Triolo took ground balls on Monday at PNC Park before the game against the Washington Nationals and didn't have any issues. The 27-year-old is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday, but that might not happen until later this week or weekend after he plays in a few rehab games on the farm. Triolo is more useful to the Bucs for his glove and not his bat, limiting his fantasy appeal to primarily NL-only leagues as infield depth. He went 1-for-17 at the plate with a walk and five stolen bases in six games for Pittsburgh to begin his third MLB season before landing on the IL.

In the meantime, Cheng will take his place as a utility infielder for the Bucs. The 23-year-old Taiwanese infielder had gone only 1-for-14 with a walk and six strikeouts in five games for Triple-A Indianapolis before getting his first major-league call-up.

Fantasy managers should continue to expect Isiah Kiner-Falefa to have a role in the starting nine while Triolo remains sidelined. Last season, Triolo posted a modest .216/.296/.315 slash line with nine home runs and eight stolen bases. When healthy, he should only be targeted in deeper formats given his low offensive upside.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington mentions Jared Triolo, DJ Stewart and Darick Hall as options that the Pirates will consider at first base now that Spencer Horwitz is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a wrist injury that required surgery. Those three players should see the most reps at first base in spring training with Horwitz sidelined, but Cherington also mentioned the possibility that there could be others that get work at first that aren't as familiar with the position. Cherington also said the team's focus right now is to keep left fielder Bryan Reynolds in the outfield. Triolo won a Gold Glove as a utility player in 2024 and is the most likely option to benefit the most from Horwitz's injury early in the season. However, he hit just .216/.296/.315 with nine homers and eight steals in 125 games in 2024 and probably won't move the needle much fantasy-wise, especially if he's in a platoon at first.

The 26-year-old Triolo is getting more run in Pittsburgh's lineup with both Nick Gonzales and Ke'Bryan Hayes on the shelf. He's still not much more of a fantasy option in mixed leagues, though, and is hitting .197/.283/.285 on the year with six homers, 33 RBI and five steals in 95 games played in his second year in the big leagues. Fantasy managers should be able to find better DFS options than Williams, who is still searching for his first major-league home run in his 75th career game.

Despite Triolo's bat showing some promise, fantasy managers in standard leagues are wise to avoid him. Those in NL-only and deeper league formats should consider him if options are limited at the hot corner.

Triolo ended up staying in the 9-7 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, so his injury isn't anything serious and shouldn't land him on the injured list. With an off day coming on Tuesday, the 26-year-old could be back in action as soon as Wednesday versus the Nationals. Alika Williams will get the start at second base on Monday and is hitting ninth against Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore. In the first four games of the year, Triolo has gone 5-for-17 (.294) with two RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in 20 plate appearances.

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jared Triolo's versatility may keep him from being the "everyday" second baseman in 2024, according to MLB.com's Jake Crouse. Triolo impressed in his rookie season in 2023, hitting .298/.388/.398 with three home runs, 21 RBI, six stolen bases and 30 runs scored in his first 54 major-league games. He's also a minor-league Gold Glove defender at third base and basically can play any position on the infield dirt. The fact that Triolo carries four gloves because of his utility defensively makes it seem less likely that he sticks at second permanently versus bouncing around. The good news is that the 25-year-old should see plenty of playing time at multiple positions, although it's fair to wonder how well he'll perform after having a fortunate BABIP while striking out a third of the time in 2023. Triolo is most attractive in deep mixed and NL-only leagues because of his defensive versatility.
