Sun Mar 3009:54Orioles Acquire Cody Poteet From Cubs
The Baltimore Orioles have acquired pitcher Cody Poteet from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash. Poteet was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the swap was made. The 30-year-old was in camp with the Cubs but did not make the Opening Day roster and had been with Triple-A Iowa to begin the year. The righty spent the 2024 campaign with the New York Yankees and held a 2.22 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP across 24 1/3 innings, working as both a reliever and as a starter. He'll probably be one of the first names called when the Orioles need help out of the bullpen or a spot start, but isn't on the fantasy radar at this point.

Sat Mar 114:09Cubs Option Cody Poteet, Caleb Kilian, Jack Neely, Gavin Hollowell To Triple-A
The Chicago Cubs optioned pitchers Cody Poteet, Caleb Kilian, Jack Neely, and Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A on Saturday. Poteet spent the 2024 campaign with the New York Yankees and held a 2.22 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP across 24 1/3 innings. Kilian is a former well-regarded prospect but has struggled through his brief taste of the majors as he posted a high 9.22 ERA with a 2.01 WHIP across 27 1/3 innings. Neely made his MLB debut last summer and held a 9.00 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP across his first six MLB frames. Hollowell began his MLB career in Colorado and only logged one 1/3 innings with the Cubs last season. This transaction should provide Chris Flexen and Nate Pearson a good opportunity to make the Opening Day roster, who both signed a contract with the Cubs in the offseason.

Wed Feb 1922:49Cody Poteet To Start Cactus League Opener On Thursday
Chicago Cubs right-hander Cody Poteet, who was acquired in the offseason trade with the New York Yankees that involved outfielder Cody Bellinger, is slated to start the team's Cactus League opener on Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pitchers Brad Keller, Daniel Palencia, Jack Neely and Brooks Kriske are scheduled to appear in Thursday's game for Chicago. Poteet, 30, appeared in only five games (four starts) for the Yankees in 2024 and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 18 hits (two home runs) while walking eight and striking out 16 in 24 1/3 innings pitched. Barring injuries to other Cubs pitchers, Poteet will likely open the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Iowa. Poteet has a 3.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 69:35 K:BB in 83 big-league innings over 24 outings (13 starts) in three MLB seasons since debuting with the Marlins in 2021. He's off the fantasy radar altogether.

Wed Dec 18 202400:03Cody Poteet Dealt To The Cubs
The Chicago Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Cody Poteet from the New York Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger and cash, according to sources. Poteet only appeared in five regular-season games (four starts) for the Yankees in 2024 and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 18 hits (two home runs) while walking eight and striking out 16 in 24 1/3 innings pitched. He made his debut in 2021 with the Miami Marlins and has a 3.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 20.2% strikeout rate and 10.2% walk rate in 83 innings over three major-league seasons. Poteet won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar next year but will give the Cubs some pitching insurance as both a starter and reliever. He will most likely start the 2025 campaign pitching for Triple-A Iowa.

Sun Jul 21 202414:16Cody Poteet Begins Light Throwing, Nearing Bullpen Sessions
New York Yankees pitcher Cody Poteet (triceps) has begun lightly throwing from the mound and is nearing his first bullpen session. Poteet hit the 15-day injured list on June 18 with a right triceps strain and was shut down from throwing through the rest of June before being re-evaluated. The 29-year-old made four starts this season and performed well with a 2.14 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 7:13 BB:K ratio across 21 innings. He limited hard contact quite well with a 6.6% barrel rate. The UCLA product will likely shift to a bullpen role once he is cleared to return but may be called upon during the stretch run to make a handful of spot starts. He might have streaming appeal but should be left on all waiver wires for the time being.

Fri May 31 202412:33Cody Poteet To Start On Saturday
New York Yankees right-hander Cody Poteet (finger) will make the start on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants after the Yankees placed right-hander Clarke Schmidt (lat) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday. Poteet had been dealing with a blister on his finger at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but manager Aaron Boone said he's good to go for this weekend. The 29-year-old had a quality start and a win in his lone start in the big leagues for the Yankees this year, allowing one earned run while walking none and striking out four in six innings against the Cleveland Guardians on April 13. At Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he's gone 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 38:11 K:BB in 33 1/3 innings over seven starts. Poteet should be sufficiently stretched out and will only be worth a look as a fantasy streamer in much deeper leagues.

Thu Jan 4 202421:54Yankees Sign Cody Poteet
The New York Yankees agreed to an undisclosed major-league deal with free-agent right-hander Cody Poteet on Thursday. Poteet pitched for the Miami Marlins in 2021-22 and had a 4.45 ERA in 19 appearances (nine starts). He had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, signed with the Kansas City Royals on a minor-league deal and only pitched in one game in the minors in late September of 2023. The 29-year-old will become depth for the Yankees' starting rotation and bullpen heading into spring training in 2024. In his 19 appearances for the Fish, Poteet also posted a 1.28 WHIP, 27 walks and 53 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings pitched. Poteet won't be anywhere near the fantasy radar for spring drafts.

Miami Marlins pitcher Cody Poteet (elbow) has been transferred to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has had multiple stints on the IL this season while dealing with elbow inflammation. Poteet has a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 21:11 K/BB ratio across 28 innings (two starts) on the year.

Tue Jul 5 202219:44Cody Poteet Begins Rehab Assignment
Miami Marlins right-hander Cody Poteet (elbow) started a minor league rehab assignment on Monday with Single-A Jupiter and threw two innings. Poteet last started for the Marlins on May 25 against the Tampa Bay Rays and reported soreness in his elbow to the medical staff. The 27-year-old could be back with the Marlins later this week, barring any setbacks. Before his injury, he had a nice 2.42 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out 20 and walking 11 in 26 innings in 11 appearances (two starts). Poteet will give the Marlins more bullpen depth when he returns, but he's not really on the fantasy radar coming out of the bullpen.
