Fri Apr 1807:19Spencer Torkelson Drives In Three On Thursday
Detroit Tigers DH Spencer Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, three RBI, and a walk in a 6-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Torkelson plated the first runs of the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and later came back to add an RBI single in the eighth inning. Torkelson is off to a good start in 2025, hitting .286 with six homers, six doubles, 15 runs, 16 RBI, and a stolen base across 70 at-bats. He remains a solid corner infielder in all fantasy leagues.

Sun Apr 1308:56Spencer Torkelson Connects On Two-Run Homer
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson has been a nice surprise for this offense early in the season. Torkelson continued his success at the plate during Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The 25-year-old smacked a two-run home run off Kody Funderburk in the sixth inning to help extend the lead. Torkelson would finish his day 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI, and two runs scored in the victory. He's slashing .314/.419/.647 with four home runs and 10 RBI this season. He's red-hot right now so fantasy managers should take advantage of it while they can.

Sun Apr 618:27Spencer Torkelson Smacks Game-Winning Hit
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson was struggling at the plate, but he came up clutch for his team during this game. Torkelson was hitless with one strikeout until he came up in the ninth inning. He smacked a two-RBI double to help give his team the lead in the final frame. It seemed like coming into this season that the Tigers were nearly ready to give up on the former first-overall pick. So far, Torkelson is slashing .324/.439/.618 with two homers and six RBI in the first nine games. He'll likely continue to pick up steam on the waiver wire, assuming his hot streak at the plate continues.

Fri Mar 2810:13Spencer Torkelson Hits A Home Run On Thursday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson hit a 423-foot laser to left field off of Alex Vesia in the seventh inning of the Tigers' 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Thursday's season opener. It was an excellent night for Torkelson, as he got on base in all five plate appearances and went 1-for-1 with four walks, two runs scored, and one RBI. Torkelson spent some time in Triple-A last season working on cutting down his strikeout percentage and getting on base more, so this is exactly what the Tigers and fantasy managers wanted to see to begin his 2025 campaign. He's off to a good start and will look to continue his success Friday and Saturday as the Tigers look to win a few games versus the Dodgers before heading to Seattle early next week.

Wed Mar 2615:39Spencer Torkelson Makes Opening Day Roster
Detroit Tigers first baseman/designated hitter Spencer Torkelson, the former No. 1 overall pick, has made the team's Opening Day roster, sources tell the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Torkelson, who has so far been a disappointment for the Tigers despite hitting 31 homers and driving in 94 runs in 2023, will open the 2025 season on the big-league roster after slashing .340/.389/.680 with a 1.07 OPS, two doubles, five home runs, 11 RBI and a stolen base in 19 Grapefruit League games. Not only is the 25-year-old right-handed power bat on the Opening Day roster, but he figures to open the season as Detroit's primary designated hitter with Kerry Carpenter being needed full time in the outfield. After an impressive 2023 campaign, Torkelson's hard-hit numbers plunged and his strikeout rate went back up in 2024. The power is there, but he will need to perform and make more contact in order to keep regular playing time.

Sat Mar 2213:04Spencer Torkelson In Position To Make Opening Day Roster
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson has continued to impress in spring training and has put himself in a good position to make the Opening Day roster. Torkelson has been one of the most consistent bats in the Detroit lineup during camp, as he has posted a strong .302/.364/.581 slash line with four home runs. He held a 4:10 BB:K and swiped one bag. In addition to his improving bat, Torkelson has begun to see time in right field, which has only improved his chances of making the Opening Day roster. Throughout the start of his professional career, Torkelson has exclusively only played at first base. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status, as he could open the season as a depth option on the roster. Last season, he posted an underwhelming .219/.295/.374 line with 10 home runs. If he continues to impress, he could eventually carve out time as first base behind Colt Keith, at right field, or even as a designated hitter. He is worth taking as a late-round flier in AL-only formats.

Mon Mar 1721:31Spencer Torkelson Could Play Regularly As DH
The Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold writes that first baseman Spencer Torkelson could see regular at-bats this year at designated hitter. The Tigers could be rotating players around early in the year in the outfield with both Parker Meadows (arm) and Matt Vierling (shoulder) injured, which could mean more looks for Torkelson at DH if Kerry Carpenter is needed more in the outfield. The former No. 1 overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State University hasn't lived up to his draft stock to this point, even after clubbing a career-high 31 long balls and driving in 94 runs in his second season in 2023. The 25-year-old right-handed slugger took a step back last year, though, posting a .669 OPS with only 10 home runs in 92 games played. However, he's hitting .286 (10-for-35) with four homers and nine RBI in 14 spring training games and could be a sneaky late-round flier for some power in deeper fantasy leagues.

Sat Mar 813:25Spencer Torkelson Goes Deep Twice On Friday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson had a big day at the plate on Friday in the Grapefruit League win over the Baltimore Orioles, going 3-for-3 with two solo home runs. The former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State University is now hitting .350 (7-for-20) with three home runs, four RBI, one steal and four runs scored in eight spring training games this year as he vies for playing time in 2025 in Detroit. The 25-year-old right-handed power bat clubbed 31 home runs and drove in 94 runs in 2023, but he slashed just .219/.295/.374 with a .669 OPS, 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 92 games for the Tigers last year and looks to be the odd-man out as Opening Day approaches this year. However, Torkelson is still young and could force his way into regular playing time, either at first or DH, if he can continue making consistent contact given the raw power he possesses.

Mon Feb 321:17Tigers Haven't Given Up On Spencer Torkelson
The Detroit Tigers say they haven't given up on first baseman Spencer Torkelson despite trade speculation and the fact that he's posted a disappointing .693 career OPS in 1,469 MLB plate appearances. The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen writes that Torkelson's path to a roster spot in 2025 as a right-handed first baseman/designated hitter is difficult, and it might take an injury for him to have a shot. At the very least, he'll be competing with Justyn-Henry Malloy in spring training. Stavenhagen thinks the Tigers would rather have Torkelson around at Triple-A Toledo as an insurance policy than trade him away for nothing. The 25-year-old former first overall pick has a tougher path to playing time in Motown this year after the Tigers signed second baseman Gleyber Torres, which will push Colt Keith to first base. Torkelson had a .669 OPS last year and was demoted to the minors.

Sat Jan 2508:23Mets Interested In Acquiring Spencer Torkelson
According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the New York Mets have shown interest in trading for Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson. The former No.1 pick in the 2020 MLB Draft had a disappointing campaign last summer and could be without a role in the starting lineup this season. In 2024, Torkelson posted an underwhelming .219/.295/.374 line with just 10 home runs. Earlier this offseason, the Tigers acquired second baseman Gleyber Torres and plan to move Colt Keith to first base. However, in 2023, the Arizona State product flashed some upside as he held a .233/.313/.446 line with 31 home runs. With Torkelson not having a defined role for the upcoming season, it could make him easier to acquire if the Mets are unable to resign Pete Alonso. The Mets might also acquire Torkelson to provide some depth at first base, as Mark Vientos will likely cover that position in the short term, which will leave Brett Baty, ... [More]

Fri Dec 27 202416:19Spencer Torkelson's 2025 Role Not Defined
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson's role for the 2025 season has yet to be defined, according to general manager Scott Harris. The Tigers signed infielder Gleyber Torres on Friday in free agency to be their everyday second baseman next year. Colt Keith, who was the starter at the keystone as a rookie in 2024, will shift over to first base next year. With the 25-year-old Torkelson's role up in the air, the Tigers will most likely look to shop him on the trade market. But if he stays in Detroit, the former top overall pick from Arizona State could end up being on the short side of a platoon at either first base or designated hitter. Torkelson hit 31 homers and drove in 94 in 2023 but took a big step backwards in 2024, was demoted to the minors for a bit and had a .219/.295/.374 slash line with just 10 homers and 37 RBI in 92 games. His stock is way down heading into fantasy drafts next spring.

Tue Sep 10 202418:08Spencer Torkelson Scratched On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (illness) has been scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Torkelson is one of a few players that are battling a minor illness on the Tigers roster. This isn't something that should sideline Torkelson for more than a few days. In his place, Andy Ibanez will cover first base and bat sixth versus right-hander Bradley Blalock. Ibanez has quietly put together a decent season as a reserve player. He's hitting .259 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 84 games. He figures to get more playing time while the Tigers are down a few players.

Mon Aug 26 202423:54Spencer Torkelson Racks Up Three Hits, Homers On Monday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson had three hits in his team's 6-3 win against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. Torkelson officially went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, and three RBI. His three-run home run was critical, as it came in the seventh inning and gave the Tigers the lead late. The former first overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft has had an underwhelming season at the plate, slashing .220/.286/.376 with only six homers in 63 games (245 at-bats). Torkelson is starting to heat up at the plate, hitting two home runs and logging six RBI over his last five games. Fantasy managers can take a chance on Torkelson (rostered in 40% in Yahoo leagues) due to his power upside.

Fri Aug 23 202401:12Spencer Torkelson Hitting Well Since Return To Majors
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson had a solid day at the plate again on Thursday, going 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk. Torkelson was the only Tiger to get to Cubs starter Justin Steele, homering off him in the seventh inning to put Detroit on the board. Since returning to the majors on August 17, Torkelson has gone 7-for-17 (.412) with three runs scored, a homer, and two RBI. He has also walked three times and only struck out three times, which was the main issue for the 24-year-old earlier in the season. The talent is there for Tork, who blasted 31 homers last season as a sophomore, and he can certainly be useful down the stretch in fantasy if he heats up. It may be worth grabbing him if first base is a weakness or even if you have a free spot to play with.

Sat Aug 17 202412:37Spencer Torkelson Recalled And Starting
The Detroit Tigers recalled first baseman Spencer Torkelson, the first overall pick in 2020, from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, according to multiple sources who were not at liberty to discuss roster moves publicly. Torkelson is starting at first base and batting sixth on Saturday at Comerica Park against New York Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon. Torkelson hit .239 with 11 home runs and a .799 OPS in 58 games for the Mud Hens. The 24-year-old right-handed power hitter hasn't played for the Tigers since June 1. In a corresponding move, the Tigers optioned Bligh Madris, their primary first baseman against right-handers, to Toledo. While there's no questions about Torkelson's raw power, he posted a 30.9% strikeout rate in his 58 games for Toledo, striking out 85 times in 275 plate appearances. However, he did show improvement against fastballs.

Tue Jul 30 202411:37Spencer Torkelson Hits Two Homers In Triple-A Game
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 2-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, July 28. After a dreadful start to the season, the former first-overall pick was demoted in early June. Since then, he's slashing .246/.365/.431 with seven doubles, eight homers, 32 RBI and 31:62 BB/SO. Recently, he's been playing rather well. In nine game since the All-Star Break, he's gone 9-for-32 (.281 AVG) with a double, three homers, and 10 RBI. If he keeps this up, he'll almost certainly be recalled to the big-league roster. Overall, Torkelson's potential is undeniable. Last season, he mashed 34 doubles and 31 homers for the Tigers.

Sun Jun 2 202421:02Tigers Option Spencer Torkelson To Triple-A
The Detroit Tigers optioned first baseman Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Justyn-Henry Malloy will be promoted to the big league roster in a corresponding move. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft was hitting .201/.226/.330 with four homers and 18 RBI over 209 at-bats. Torkelson's .597 OPS ranked 149th among qualified players and struck out in 11 of his last 21 at-bats. The 24-year-old still has time to live up to his potential, but Sunday's demotion plummets what little fantasy value Torkelson had. He's safe to drop in redraft leagues and buy low in dynasty formats.

Sat May 25 202412:02Spencer Torkelson Resting On Saturday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is not in the team's starting lineup on Saturday versus the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Mark Canha will get the start at first base for Detroit and will bat third in the lineup against Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios. Torkelson is due for a day off after going hitless in 16 at-bats in his last five games to drop his season line to .207/.279/.330. The former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State also has homered just three times in 188 at-bats so far this year while driving in 17 and scoring 21 runs for the Tigers. In the month of May, he's gone 15-for-77 (.195) with all three of his homers, six RBI and 18 strikeouts in 84 plate appearances over 21 games. Canha does have a solo homer in seven career at-bats against Berrios and could be a DFS sleeper despite his .226 average (37-for-164) in 2024.

Tue May 14 202400:06Spencer Torkelson Homers In Back-To-Back Days
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson swatted his first home run of the season on Mother's Day and followed up with his second dinger in Monday's 6-5 win over the Miami Marlins. Despite the Tiger's winning record, it's been a tough go for the 24-year-old first basemen this season, sporting a .225 batting average with only two home runs and 16 RBI. With a career batting average of .222, don't expect too much improvement in that department during the season, but after slugging 31 homers in 2023, one can only hope the last two days mean he finally found his power stroke and can keep it up moving forward. Torkelson has a great outlook over the next two days, with southpaws Ryan Weathers (4.54 ERA) and Trevor Rogers (6.57 ERA) toeing the rubber.

Tue Apr 23 202416:31Spencer Torkelson Getting First Day Off
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is getting his first day off of the season on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Torkelson made it 23 games before getting his first day of rest in 2024, and he's currently hitting .231/.311/.319 with a league-leading eight doubles, no home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in 104 plate appearances. Mark Canha is getting the start at first base and will hit third for the Tigers, while Riley Greene is the designated hitter and batting leadoff against Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot. It's pretty concerning that Torkelson, the former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State, has yet to clear the bases so far this year. Neither Canha nor Greene have faced Pepiot in their careers.
