Seattle Mariners right-hander Jackson Kowar is set to undergo Tommy John surgery after feeling soreness in his right arm. The 27-year-old went to see a doctor to check on his arm issues a few days ago and the end result concludes his 2024 season before it began. Acquired in a trade with the Braves this winter, Kowar struggled to a 6.43 ERA across 23 outings with the Royals in the 2023 season while also posting a 5.96 ERA in 45 1/3 frames at the Triple-A level. A 2018 Competitive Balance first-round pick, Kowar is likely to miss a decent chunk of the 2025 season, as well.

He is competing for a long relief role with the M's in the 2024 season but remains off the fantasy radar.

When healthy, the former second-round right-hander has a live arm and has the ability to reach triple digits with his heater.

He entered the year as one of the team's top pitching prospects and the organization will surely give him a chance to bounce back next year. However, fantasy managers are going to be very hesitant to take a chance on him after such a horrendous rookie campaign.

He pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, one walk and five earned runs while striking out four. He has now allowed at least five earned runs in four consecutive starts. The 24-year-old rookie has really struggled in his first taste of the majors this year. Over eight games (seven starts), he's gone 0-5 with an 11.28 ERA and a 2.16 WHIP. He's scheduled to make one more start this season against the Minnesota Twins in the team's final game of the year on Sunday.

The 24-year-old made his first three MLB outings this past June and really struggled, allowing 10 earned runs over five innings. He spent the past two-plus months at Triple-A before being called up prior to Wednesday's game. He'll likely make his next start for the Royals on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. He's someone worth keeping an eye on for all fantasy formats.
