The Baltimore Orioles reinstated left-hander Keegan Akin from the paternity list on Friday and optioned left-hander Nick Vespi to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Akin will return to the team after being away for the last three days for the birth of his child. The 29-year-old southpaw will return to Baltimore's bullpen this weekend for the remainder of their series against the Houston Astros at Camden Yards. The former second-round selection in 2016 out of Western Michigan has already appeared in a career-high 51 games (all in relief) for the O's in 2024 and has gone 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA (2.99 FIP), a 0.95 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB in 64 innings. Akin has been much better than his 3.52 ERA would indicate and will now return to a key role in Baltimore's bullpen.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed left-hander Keegan Akin and outfielder Anthony Santander on the COVID-19 injured list before Wednesday’s game at Tampa Bay. Akin had been scheduled to start against the Rays. Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde learned about the situation late Tuesday night. “We’re following the protocols,” Hyde said. “There’s going to be more information.
