Mon Mar 1721:54Patrick Sandoval Steadily Progressing In His Rehab
The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that Boston Red Sox left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow), who had a modified Tommy John surgery and internal-brace procedure a year ago, remains on track to return in the second half in 2025. Sandoval said he's steadily progressing in his rehab and is up to throwing from 90 feet and is doing three sets of 25 throws three times a week. He's set to increase his progression to four days a week in the next week or so as he builds up stamina toward bullpen sessions. The 28-year-old southpaw is still far from game action but is trending in the right direction after signing a two-year, $18.25 million deal with Boston over the winter. Because Sandoval won't pitch much in his first year in Beantown, he can pretty much be avoided in all single-year fantasy leagues to open the 2025 campaign.

Mon Feb 1714:13Patrick Sandoval Placed On 60-Day Injured List
The Boston Red Sox placed left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow) on the 60-day injured list over the weekend to make room on the 40-man roster for third baseman Alex Bregman. Sandoval signed a two-year, $18.25 million deal with the Red Sox in the offseason, but he's unlikely to be ready to make his Boston debut in 2025 until some point in the second half of the season after undergoing an internal-brace procedure on his left elbow in June of 2024. For that reason, the 28-year-old southpaw can be ignored in the majority of single-year fantasy leagues. Sandoval's strikeout and walk rates were trending in the right direction with the Los Angeles Angels last year before his injury, although he went 2-8 with a 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 81 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings pitched over 16 starts. At best, Sandoval is a stash candidate in deep-mixed and AL-only formats this year.

Thu Jan 1623:14Patrick Sandoval Recovering From Internal-Brace Procedure
Boston Red Sox left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow) clarified recently that he had an internal-brace procedure, not full Tommy John surgery, on his left throwing elbow in early July of 2024. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said he hoped that Sandoval could join the starting rotation at some point in the second half of the 2025 campaign. The former Angels hurler started his throwing program a few weeks ago and is progressing nicely with spring training around the corner in three-plus weeks. "I'm in a good spot and I feel really good," Sandoval said. The 28-year-old southpaw's 5.08 ERA in 16 starts last year likely had a lot to do with his arm injury, and he was also pretty unlucky with a high .341 batting average on balls in play (BABIP). There's bounce-back potential, but fantasy managers in standard-sized leagues can probably ignore him in drafts since he'll miss at least half the season.

Fri Dec 20 202414:10Patrick Sandoval, Red Sox Agree On Two-Year Deal
Free-agent left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow) and the Boston Red Sox agreed on a two-year, $18.25 million deal on Friday, according to sources. The 28-year-old left-hander is coming off an internal-brace procedure on his left elbow but expects to return at some point in the second half of the 2025 season. He became a free agent after the Los Angeles Angels non-tendered him in November. Sandoval won't be on the fantasy radar to begin the season and will probably be too risky to roster in the majority of formats once he returns in the second half in his debut with Boston. He's the second left-handed starter the BoSox have added this offseason after the traded for Garrett Crochet. Sandoval leans more on his secondary pitches than he does an average fastball, which limits his fantasy upside with a career 22.7% strikeout rate. He has a 4.01 career ERA with a 1.39 WHIP in six MLB seasons to date.

Sat Nov 23 202419:14Patrick Sandoval Headed To Free Agency
The Los Angeles Angels have declined to tender Patrick Sandoval's contract, which will send him to free agency. The 28-year-old has spent his entire six-year MLB career with the Angels and held a cumulative 4.01 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and a 236:529 BB:K ratio through 536 innings of work. Last summer, the southpaw posted a hefty 5.08 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP through 81 frames. Under the hood, he held a strong 51.% barrel rate and an above-average 36.3% hard-hit rate. However, he struggled to command his pitches as he had a 9.9% walk rate, which was well below the average mark. This past June, Sandoval underwent an internal brace procedure, which will likely sideline him through most of the 2025 campaigns. As a result, fantasy managers should not expect him to carry any fantasy value next summer as he searches for a new club.

Mon Jun 24 202418:19Patrick Sandoval To Have Season-Ending Surgery
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval (elbow) is expected to undergo season-ending surgery. The southpaw was recently placed on the injured list due to an elbow issue. After further testing, Sandoval was found to have a torn UCL and will likely need Tommy John surgery. If that happens, Sandoval probably won't be able to pitch again until the middle or late next season. He wasn't much of a fantasy option this season with a 2-8 record and 5.08 ERA in 16 starts. The Angels have recalled another starter yet, so we'll have to wait and see what they do with Sandoval's spot.

Sat Jun 22 202422:39Patrick Sandoval Lands On The Injured List
Los Angeles Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured with a left elbow strain. The Angels recalled reliever Guillermo Zuniga from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. He exited Friday's start against the Los Angeles Dodgers after just 2 1/3 innings. Sandoval will be eligible to return from the injured list around the All-Star break. Before landing on the injured list, Sandoval owned a 5.08 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, and an 81: 35 K: BB across 79 2/3. Zuniga won't take Sandoval's spot in the rotation, and the Angels will look for a replacement for the southpaw in the next few days.

Sat Jun 22 202401:26Patrick Sandoval Leaves His Start With Forearm Tightness
Los Angeles Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (forearm) left his start early on Friday against the crosstown-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium due to left-forearm tightness, the Angels announced. Sandoval made it only 2 1/3 innings in this one, but he didn't allow a run while giving up two hits, walking two and striking out only one in a no-decision in an eventual 3-2 extra-inning victory. It remains to be seen exactly what the issue is for the 27-year-old southpaw, but forearm injuries usually always lead to a stint on the injured list, so fantasy managers might want to prepare for that. We should know more on his timetable on Saturday. Sandoval entered Friday's game with a 2-8 record, uneven 5.24 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 80 K's in 77 1/3 innings (15 starts). He's walked too many and given up too much loud contact to maintain any kind of consistency for fantasy streamers.

Wed May 8 202400:32Patrick Sandoval Fans Seven In Tuesday's Win
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval improved to 2-5 in Tuesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates. Sandoval pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. The 27-year-old has provided plenty of strikeouts but has been erratic and now owns a 4.85 ERA with a 10.38 K/9 rate and a 3.92 BB/9 rate in eight starts and 39 IP. His next scheduled start is a middling matchup against the Royals. Fantasy managers may want to keep him on the bench if possible until he can provide that he can pitch well consistently.

Thu May 2 202400:12Patrick Sandoval Fans 10 In Loss
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval tallied 10 strikeouts in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, tossing five innings of two-run ball on four hits and two walks en route to a loss. It was Sandoval's first game with double-digit punchouts since 2022, but Kyle Schwarber's two-run single in the second inning proved to be enough to saddle the hurler with a loss on a day the Phillies struck out 18 times. The 27-year-old southpaw will take an underwhelming 5.91 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, and 38:16 K:BB over 32 frames (seven starts) for the Halos into in his next scheduled appearance on Tuesday on the road against the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates, who are scoring just 2.4 runs per game over their last 21 contests.

Mon Apr 8 202422:08Patrick Sandoval Seeks More Success Against Rays
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval aims to shift gears from a rocky start to the season when he gets the ball during Tuesday's start at home versus the visiting Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Aaron Civale. Sandoval fared far better in last Wednesday's win over the Miami Marlins, but he's still yielded five earned runs in 7 1/3 innings to begin the campaign and gave up nine runs in 11 1/3 spring training frames. The 27-year-old left-hander has thrown well in his past three appearances against the Rays dating back to 2022, posting a 2.87 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings. Sandoval is worth adding as a streamer ahead of Tuesday night's waiver wire runs in season-long fantasy leagues for a decent matchup, and he'll also be worth a look in DFS contests for those looking to go cheap at pitcher.

Tue Mar 19 202413:31Angels Name Patrick Sandoval As Their Opening Day Starter
The Los Angeles Angels announced on Tuesday that left-hander Patrick Sandoval will start on Opening Day on March 28 against the Baltimore Orioles on the road. Against the defending American League East champions on the road in a hitter-friendly ballpark is not the place you want to take your chances on Sandoval for fantasy purposes. Ranked as RotoBaller's No. 99 fantasy starter heading into the 2024 season, the 27-year-old southpaw went 7-13 last year with a 4.11 ERA (4.18 FIP) and 1.51 WHIP with 74 walks and 128 strikeouts in 144 2/3 innings over his 28 starts in his fifth season in the big leagues. It was a step back from his 2022 campaign. On top of it, Sandoval hasn't been sharp in Cactus League play this spring with a 7.15 ERA, 10 strikeouts and six walks in 11 1/3 innings.

Tue Sep 26 202321:32Patrick Sandoval Placed On The Injured List
Los Angeles Angels southpaw Patrick Sandoval (oblique) hit the 15-day injured list on Tuesday, according to Angels PR. In a corresponding move, the club recalled lefty Kolten Ingram to join the bullpen. With less than a week to go in the regular season, the 26-year-old Sandoval won't pitch until 2024, as the Angels are set to miss the playoffs. He last pitched on Monday against the Texas Rangers and experienced right oblique tightness before leaving early. Across 144 2/3 innings this year, Sandoval pitched to a 4.11 ERA, 19.6% strikeout rate, 11.3% walk rate, and 1.51 WHIP with seven victories. The five-year veteran remains arbitration-eligible, so he'll likely head into next season as a member of the Angels rotation once again.

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval (oblique) exited Monday's game against the Rangers with right oblique tightness, per the team's Communications Department's Twitter account. Sandoval pitched three innings, allowing no runs on two hits and five walks with two strikeouts. The 26-year-old was not able to build on his 2022 success this season, posting a 4.11 ERA, 7.96 K/9 rate, and 4.60 BB/9 rate in 28 starts. He was slated for a favorable matchup against the Athletics later in the week, but fantasy managers should keep an eye out for further health updates.

Thu Jun 29 202322:45Patrick Sandoval Shelled For Seven Runs In Thursday's Loss
Los Angeles Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (4-7) allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings in Thursday's 9-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Sandoval cruised through the first two frames before unraveling in the third inning. The 26-year-old was shelled for six runs in the third inning. He has now allowed 21 earned runs over 25 1/3 innings in June. Sandoval owns a 4.69 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and a 65: 32 K: BB across 80 2/3 innings in 2023. The southpaw will look to rebound in his next scheduled start Wednesday on the road against the Padres.

Sat Jun 3 202309:57Patrick Sandoval In Scary Spot Versus Astros
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval takes the mound versus the Houston Astros on Saturday. The 26-year-old's 15.1% strikeout rate is uncharacteristically low this year and his 4.51 xERA implies he could be in for some negative regression soon. Sandoval has permitted two runs or fewer in seven of his 10 starts, though, and carries a fine 3.42 ERA into this one. However, both season-long and daily fantasy managers should proceed with caution. The southpaw is 0-4 and holds a troubling 7.55 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP in 32 career innings against Houston. Sandoval has struck out more than five in a game just once this year and hasn't logged a win in a month.

Sandoval has now made eight starts for the Angels in 2023, posting a 3-2 record, 3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts over 44 2/3 innings of work. Sandoval's next start is set for Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.

Tue Mar 21 202300:15Patrick Sandoval Turns In Scoreless WBC Outing Monday
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval looked sharp for Team Mexico in Monday's 6-5 semifinal World Baseball Classic loss to Team Japan. The 26-year-old got the start and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Sandoval has been an intriguing option so far in his career and took a big innings jump in 2022, logging 148 2/3 IP over 27 starts. He compiled a stellar 2.91 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and a 23.7% strikeout rate. Sandoval is currently being drafted at about pick 214 overall despite the promise he has shown, making him a solid value for fantasy managers to target in drafts.

Wed Sep 21 202200:31Patrick Sandoval Takes No-Decision Tuesday
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval did not factor in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. Sandoval pitched 5 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old has quietly put together another solid season, going 6-9 with a 3.01 ERA over 25 starts and 137 1/3 IP. His next start should be a favorable matchup against the Athletics at home. Rostered in just 70 percent of leagues, Sandoval is a worthy streaming option for fantasy managers looking for a bit of extra support in the playoffs.
