Tue Mar 2513:49Jordan Montgomery Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery (elbow) is set to undergo Tommy John surgery. During camp, Montgomery logged just three innings of work and allowed five earned runs and held a 3:2 BB:K. During the early part of the offseason, Montgomery was dealing with a strain in his left index finger. However, with this new injury, fantasy managers should expect Montgomery to remain sidelined for the entire 2025 campaign and potentially most of the 2026 season as well. Last offseason, the Diamondbacks signed the southpaw after he won a World Series with the Texas Rangers. However, his debut season in the desert was underwhelming as he posted a high 6.23 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP across 117 innings of work. Montgomery was set to be deployed out of the bullpen in 2025. However, with him now sitting out, this could potentially open up a larger role for Ryne Nelson, who also fell short of his rotation bid.

Thu Mar 2016:49Teams Showing Interest In Jordan Montgomery
Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro reports that there has been recent interest from a few teams in trading for Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery. There could be even more interest from teams after Montgomery threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his Cactus League outing on Wednesday versus the division-rival Colorado Rockies. The New York Yankees come to mind as a team that might have serious interest in a reunion with Montgomery after injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow), Luis Gil (lat) and Clarke Schmidt (shoulder). The 32-year-old southpaw is looking to bounce back after a rough first year in Arizona in 2024 in which he went 8-7 with a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 83 strikeouts and 44 walks in 117 innings over 25 outings (21 starts). If he earns one of the final rotation spots for the D-backs to start the season, his workload could be limited after missing the early portion of spring training with a finger strain.

Sun Mar 908:55Jordan Montgomery Stumbles In Spring Debut
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery allowed two hits and five earned runs in his spring debut on Saturday. He was only able to tally one out before exiting the game. He served up two free passes and allowed a home run to Cincinnati Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand. This was a disappointing showing for Montgomery as he is currently competing for a spot at the back of the Arizona rotation. During the early part of camp, the southpaw was dealing with a strained index finger which delayed his debut. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progress during camp but it appears he will likely open the season in a long relief role. Last season, the 32-year-old posted a 6.23 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP in his Arizona debut. If he does open the campaign in a long relief role, he will only carry minimal value in NL-only formats.

Wed Mar 514:55Jordan Montgomery To Pitch In Spring Game On Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (finger) will pitch in a spring game on Friday, March 7, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery has missed the early portion of spring training due to a left index-finger strain, but it's good news that he's close to returning to game action, whether it be in a minor-league setting or in a Cactus League game against the Los Angeles Angels. Still, the 32-year-old veteran southpaw may not have enough time to get his arm built up in order to start the 2025 season in the Opening Day starting rotation for the D-backs. Given Monty's injury and his poor performance in 2024 in his first year in the desert, he should be avoided in 12-team mixed leagues. Never much of a strikeout artist, Montgomery's strikeout rate dropped from 21.4% to 15.6% last year while he also posted an ugly 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 25 outings (21 starts).

Thu Feb 2708:13Jordan Montgomery Set To Throw Another Bullpen On Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (finger) is expected to throw his next bullpen session on Friday. The southpaw completed a session on Tuesday and will look to continue his recovery process later in the week. If this session goes well, the 32-year-old could be cleared to face hitters sometime next week. Montgomery was diagnosed with a strain on his left index finger earlier in February. He was sidelined from throwing for a few days but was quickly cleared for action. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he could be approaching his spring debut. Last summer, Montgomery had the worst season of his career as he held a high 6.23 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP across 117 innings. If Montgomery can return to form during camp, he could compete for one of the final spots in the starting rotation.

Mon Feb 2407:13Jordan Montgomery Set To Throw Bullpen On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery (finger) is set to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Montgomery has yet to throw a bullpen during spring training due to a flexor strain in his left index finger. He sustained this injury just before spring training. The southpaw was initially scheduled to throw on Saturday but will now look to take the mound on Tuesday. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case he faces a setback. Last season, Montgomery held a career-worst 6.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP across 117 innings. He tallied only 83 punchouts and generated a poor .283 xBA. Montgomery is competing for a spot in the back half of the Arizona rotation. However, given his struggles last season, he may open the 2025 campaign in a long relief role.

Fri Feb 2116:16Jordan Montgomery To Throw Bullpen Session On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. The left-hander has been delayed to start the spring due to a lingering finger issue. The hope is that Montgomery will be able to get back on the mound soon. The southpaw is currently battling for one of the final spots in the starting rotation. Montgomery is coming off a horrendous 2024 campaign where he posted a 6.23 ERA across 25 appearances. The left-hander should rebound in 2025, but he still remains a shaky fantasy option out of the gate.

Sun Feb 1617:20Jordan Montgomery To Throw On Tuesday Or Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (finger) is expected to throw on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The southpaw was supposed to throw last week, but has now been pushed back until possibly Tuesday. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too concerned as the D-Backs are likely just being cautious early in camp. Montgomery will be competing for a spot in the starting rotation after a horrendous 2024 campaign. The 32-year-old does have a good track record, but it's tough to trust him after posting a 6.23 ERA last season.

Thu Feb 1316:25Jordan Montgomery Dealing With Finger Strain
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (finger) underwent imaging for a left index-finger strain, but he said the plan is for him to throw again in a couple of days. "It seems like it's fairly mild. He doesn't seem overly concerned by it... We'll manage as we go," executive vice president and general manager Mike Hazen said. It was revealed that Montgomery dropped 20-25 pounds in the offseason after a very disappointing first year in Arizona in 2024, but the 32-year-old southpaw will be slightly behind at the start of camp due to his finger injury. It shouldn't keep him from being ready for Opening Day in late March, but it's just something else that will turn fantasy managers off to Montgomery as he looks for a bounce-back campaign. With low strikeout totals in his career and a drop in velocity last year, fantasy managers should be avoiding him in mixed leagues this spring.

Thu Feb 1314:25Jordan Montgomery Drops 20-25 Pounds
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery said he dropped 20 to 25 pounds this offseason after his disappointing 2024 campaign with the team. "I know my season wasn't great, and I expect a lot of myself," Montgomery said. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw helped the Texas Rangers win the World Series in the fall of 2023 before joining Arizona right before the start of the 2024 season. He imploded with a 6.23 ERA (4.48 FIP) and 1.65 WHIP with 83 strikeouts and 44 walks in 117 innings over 25 appearances (21 starts) for the Snakes. Perhaps Montgomery will pitch better this year now that he's had a normal offseason and is in better shape, but there's also no guarantee he'll open the season in the starting rotation after how bad he was a season ago. He saw his strikeout rate dip to 15.6% while posting a 41% hard-hit rate. Montgomery is outside of RotoBaller's top-100 fantasy starting pitchers.

Sat Jan 1108:53Diamondbacks Would Like To Trade Jordan Montgomery
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Arizona Diamondbacks would like to trade starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. Heyman noted that moving his contract would free up salary for a "big-time" relief pitcher. The 32-year-old had a disappointing debut season with Arizona last summer, as he posted a 6.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP across 117 innings. He struck out just 83 batters and generated a poor 5.18 xERA and a .287 xBA, placing him in the seventh and third percentile among qualified pitchers. This was a sharp decline to the 3.20 ERA and 1.19 WHIP he held during the 2023 campaign. With the Diamondbacks acquiring Corbin Burnes earlier in free agency, Montgomery is already on the outside of the current rotation. With their surplus of starting pictures, moving Montgomery would allow Arizona to improve in other positions on their roster.

Sat Dec 28 202418:56Jordan Montgomery Could Still Be Traded
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery could still be traded. Feinsand reported this following their signing of Corbin Burnes to a massive six-year contract. Montgomery's name has been on the trade throughout the offseason but has yet to find a suitor. The 32-year-old southpaw exercised his team option earlier this offseason but could still be moved. Last summer in the desert, the left-handed arm held a poor 6.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. With Corbin Burnes joining the rotation, Montgomery will face an uphill battle to earn a spot as a permanent starter as Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Ryne Nelson are all vying for the final four spots. As a result, the Diamondbacks may look to move Montgomery to improve elsewhere. Montgomery carries high-risk heading into the 2025 season given the poor 5.18 xERA he generated last season.

Mon Nov 25 202415:04Diamondbacks Shopping Jordan Montgomery, Others
USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale reports that the Arizona Diamondbacks are shopping left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery and are also listening to offers on outfielders Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas this offseason. It was a rough season for Montgomery in 2024 after not making his debut with the Snakes until April 19 due to injury. Coming off a World Series title with the Texas Rangers the previous fall, the 31-year-old southpaw finished with an 8-7 record, bloated 6.23 ERA (4.48 FIP), 1.65 WHIP, 83 strikeouts and 44 walks in 117 innings over his 25 appearances (21 starts). Montgomery exercised his $22.5 million player option to stick around in the desert in 2025, but the D-backs are looking for ways to get out of that. McCarthy, meanwhile, hit a career-best .285 with eight homers, a career-high 56 RBI and 25 steals in a career-high 142 games in his fourth MLB season.

Fri Nov 1 202408:50Jordan Montgomery Staying In Arizona
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery had his club option exercised for 2025 according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The southpaw had a rough debut season in the desert as he posted a hefty 6.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP, which were both significantly lower compared to his 3.20 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP he held in the 2023 campaign. Under the hood, Montgomery held a 5.10 xERA and .290 xBA which were among the worst marks among qualified pitchers. He also generated strikeouts at a low 15.6% mark. Fantasy managers should expect the 31-year-old to remain in the Arizona rotation throughout all of next season but is no more than a late flier in drafts this offseason given his struggles this past summer.

Fri Aug 23 202418:55Jordan Montgomery Headed To Bullpen
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will shift to the bullpen going forward. The D-Backs made Montgomery the odd man out with six healthy starters right now. The left-hander has been awful to the tune of a 6.44 ERA with a 67/36 K/BB ratio across 19 starts this season. Before this season, Montgomery had a solid track record over multiple seasons. The 2024 campaign is by far his worst of his professional career. The D-Backs will give the starting spot to Ryne Nelson who will take the mound against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Nelson has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings, so he should be worth a look as a streaming option for Friday's slate.

Tue Jul 23 202412:13Jordan Montgomery Returning To Start On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Monday that left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will return from the 15-day injured list for the middle game of the series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday. Montgomery has been working his way back since experiencing right-knee soreness on June 29, and he landed on the IL with inflammation in his right patellar tendon. After signing with the Snakes late, Montgomery has not been good, compiling a 6-5 record with a 6.44 ERA over 65 2/3 innings. Not only are the Royals a bad first matchup back from the IL for the 31-year-old southpaw, but he also didn't go on a minor-league rehab assignment. The former fourth-round pick of the New York Yankees out of South Carolina in 2014 has never been a big strikeout guy but currently has a career-low 15.1% K rate.

Fri Jul 19 202412:55Jordan Montgomery Throws Sim Game, On Track To Return Next Week
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) threw a simulated game on Thursday that consisted of 56 pitches, according to manager Torey Lovullo, and he appears to be on track to return from the 15-day injured list next week when the team is in Kansas City for a series against the Royals. It remains to be seen what day exactly Montgomery will make his return to Arizona's starting rotation, but fantasy managers are probably going to want to avoid the struggling 31-year-old southpaw, especially if his first start off the IL comes against the upstart Royals. Montgomery has not been effective in the desert with a 6.44 ERA in his 13 starts in 2024 and has been out since late June with right-knee inflammation.

Thu Jul 11 202416:35Jordan Montgomery Two Weeks Away From Rejoining The Rotation
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) is around 12 to 14 days away from returning to the team's starting rotation. Montgomery is likely to return in either the series against the Kansas City Royals or Pittsburgh Pirates after next week's All-Star break. Montgomery helped the Texas Rangers win a World Series championship last fall for the first time in franchise history, but he signed with the D-backs late this spring and just hasn't been right, going 6-5 with a bloated 6.44 ERA (4.44 FIP) and 1.67 WHIP with just 45 strikeouts and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings over his first 13 starts. The 31-year-old southpaw threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and felt good, though, as he tries to recover from right-knee inflammation. With better health, fantasy managers in deeper leagues will be hoping that Montgomery can right the ship in the second half.

Mon Jul 8 202420:07Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jordan Montgomery To Throw Bullpens
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that starting pitchers Merrill Kelly (shoulder), Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) and Jordan Montgomery (knee) will all throw bullpen sessions on Tuesday. Kelly will be throwing off a mound for the first time since suffering a right-shoulder strain in April. The 35-year-old has the most fantasy appeal of the trio but may not be ready to rejoin Arizona's rotation until late August. E-Rod has yet to make his D-backs debut in 2024 after injuring his left shoulder in spring training. Montgomery is dealing with a right-knee injury and is eligible to come off the IL on Sunday. Depending on how he fares in his bullpen session, he could return before next week's All-Star break. However, the 31-year-old has been a disaster after getting a late start to the season.

Fri Jul 5 202422:25Jordan Montgomery To Throw On Flat Ground On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will throw on flat ground on Saturday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery still has some inflammation in his right knee, but Lovullo said the team is anticipating he'll be good enough to throw on Saturday. The 31-year-old southpaw could start throwing off a mound again soon if his throwing session goes well this weekend, but Montgomery won't rejoin Arizona's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in mid-July. After helping the Texas Rangers win their first-ever World Series championship last fall, Montgomery signed with Arizona late this spring and has been a disaster in his first 13 starts, posting a 6.44 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with 45 K's and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings. He currently has a career-low 15.1% strikeout rate and has seen his walk rate increase from 4.9% in 2023 to 7.7%.
