Thu Apr 17 | 23:34 | Edwin Diaz Secures Fourth Save |
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz picked up his fourth save of the season on Thursday in a 4-1 win over the Cardinals. He struck out two and walked one in a scoreless ninth inning. It was his second straight scoreless outing since he gave up five combined runs in appearances on April 9 and April 11. His ERA still sits at an ugly 5.87 from those two outings and his six walks in 7 innings is less than ideal, but he remains one of the best closers for fantasy. He pitches on one of the best teams in baseball and remains elite at striking guys out, having 11 strikeouts so far in 2025. |

Sun Apr 6 | 18:15 | Edwin Diaz Secures Another Save |
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz was called upon to hold a one-run lead against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. The right-hander had no issues as he tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record his second save of the season. Diaz needed only 10 pitches to finish off three batters as he allowed zero baserunners. It's nice to see Diaz settling down after he struggled with his command during spring training. Fantasy managers can continue safely plugging Diaz into their lineups on a daily basis. |

Thu Mar 20 | 12:25 | Edwin Diaz's Velocity Down This Spring |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz's velocity has been down during spring training games. The stadium radar gun had Diaz's four-seam fastball sitting between 93-95 mph during his Grapefruit League outing on Wednesday, while StatCast has him averaging 95.7 mph with his four-seamer this spring. That would be the 30-year-old right-hander's lowest velocity since 2020. However, manager Carlos Mendoza thinks Diaz's velocity will continue to increase as he approaches real games next week. Two years ago before Diaz injured his knee, he was averaging 99 mph in spring games. A rival scout watching Diaz on Wednesday said he doesn't look like "the same guy." He hasn't allowed a run in his last three spring outings, but his outings haven't been clean, either. It's possible that Diaz won't be throwing as hard as he used to, but it doesn't mean he still won't be an elite fantasy closer. |

Sat Feb 15 | 12:26 | Edwin Diaz Feels Great |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz told club officials that this is the best he's ever felt, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon and Tim Britton. "I made sure my arm was ready to go," Daz said. "And I feel great." Diaz wasn't able to have a normal offseason last year after missing the entire 2023 campaign due to a knee injury, and his arm wasn't exactly ready in 2024. Heading into his age-31 season, he can opt out of his contract with the Mets after this year. Beyond 2025, Diaz is guaranteed two years and $38 million. Diaz didn't exactly look like his pre-injury self last year and also missed time with a shoulder injury, but he did have a 38.9 percent strikeout rate, which was slightly down from his 40.1 percent career mark. Another year removed from his knee injury and while closing games for one of the best teams in baseball on paper, Diaz is an elite fantasy closer. |

Tue Oct 15 2024 | 12:07 | Edwin Diaz Strikes Out Three, Earns Save On Monday |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz earned a four-out save in Monday's 7-3 victory over the Dodgers, his second save of this postseason. The 30-year-old squashed a potential Dodgers rally in the eighth, coming on with two outs and two baserunners on, getting a flyout to end the threat. The ninth inning had its usual uneasiness for Diaz though, with the first two hitters reaching base, one via hit and one via walk, but Diaz settled down and struck out the next three hitters to close the door on Los Angeles. The veteran closer will want to clean up the 1.93 WHIP through four 2024 postseason appearances to better the Mets' chances of moving on, but 10 strikeouts in four-and-two-thirds IP certainly helps limit potential damage. |

Fri Oct 4 2024 | 01:39 | Edwin Diaz Used Early In Game 3, Picks Up Win |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz picked up his first win of the postseason on Thursday, tossing 1 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of their Wild Card series. Diaz came in after Jose Butto gave up back-to-back homers and put the Mets down 2-0. He got the next five outs and set the stage for a big comeback in the top of the ninth. Diaz did end up throwing 39 pitches in this one, so his availability for Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies could be up in the air. It is the postseason though, so if Diaz is needed, he will probably be ready to go. |

Wed Jul 31 2024 | 00:32 | Edwin Diaz Notches Four-Out Save Tuesday |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz picked up his 13th save of the season in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Twins. Diaz came in to pitch the top of the eighth inning up by two with two outs and runners on first and second. He struck out Byron Buxton to end the frame and stayed on to pitch the ninth, delivering a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The 30-year-old has been disappointing by his standards for fantasy, but he has been much better from June onward. This has started to reflect in his season numbers, as he has now converted 13 of 18 save opportunities with a 3.77 ERA, a 12.48 K/9 rate, and a 3.48 BB/9 rate in 31 innings pitched. He has been one of fantasy's top closers throughout his career, and he is starting to show those skills again. |

Tue Jul 23 2024 | 00:14 | Edwin Diaz Earns 12th Save Monday |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz picked up his 12th save of the season in Monday's 6-4 win over the Marlins. Diaz came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by three. He got the first out on a strikeout, loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, got the second out on an RBI groundout, and ended the game with a pop-out. The 30-year-old has been disappointing by his standards this season, blowing five save opportunities with a 4.08 ERA, a 12.24 K/9 rate, and a 3.45 BB/9 rate. However, he has been much better since returning from the injured list in mid-June, allowing one run in 10 appearances while converting seven save opportunities. |

Sat Jul 13 2024 | 09:25 | Edwin Diaz Notches 10th Save Friday |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 7-6 win over the Rockies, although it wasn't without drama. The 30-year-old walked two batters in the inning before recording the final out on his way to earning his 10th save of the season. While it has been a rollercoaster of a season for the righty, he's been relatively solid over the last month despite the suspension, collecting five saves and allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out seven in six-and-two-thirds innings of work since June 13 (seven appearances). |

Wed Jul 10 2024 | 00:22 | Edwin Diaz Earns One-Out Save Tuesday |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz picked up his ninth save of the season in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Nationals. Diaz came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by three with two outs and a runner on first. The runner advanced to second on defensive indifference and scored on a wild pitch. However, Diaz then shut the door by striking out CJ Abrams. The 30-year-old was considered one of fantasy's top closers for this season, but he has dealt with a banned-substance suspension and a shoulder injury earlier in the season. He has only converted nine of 14 save opportunities with a 4.21 ERA, a 12.62 K/9 rate, and a 2.81 BB/9 rate. While he has disappointed overall, Diaz has been a top-tier fantasy closer throughout his career and has not allowed a run since returning from his suspension in the middle of June. |

Sat Jul 6 2024 | 23:39 | Edwin Diaz Tallies Eighth Save Of The Season On Saturday |
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz was activated from his suspension on Saturday and was tasked to hold on to a three-run lead in the final inning. Diaz hit the first batter, Oneil Cruz. Then he struck out Rowdy Tellez to earn the first out. He then got Andrew McCutchen to ground into a double play to seal the victory. This was a great outing for the 30-year-old as he has been sidelined over the past two weeks due to suspension protocols and has dealt with a shoulder injury in May. Across 24 innings, Diaz sits with a disappointing 4.50 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. However, he has tossed four straight shutout frames and has only allowed two hits in this span, which suggests the elite closer may be rounding into form. |

Sat Jul 6 2024 | 12:25 | Edwin Diaz Returns From Suspension |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz is returning on Saturday from his 10-game suspension for use of an illegal substance. While Diaz was serving his suspension, the Mets' bullpen had a rough 8.37 ERA, which was the worst in the majors during that span. Diaz's return couldn't come at a better time for the Mets, although the 30-year-old Puerto Rican reliever hasn't been perfect himself in 2024 and has missed time with a shoulder injury. He's currently 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA (4.16 FIP), a 1.17 WHIP, seven saves, 33 strikeouts and seven walks in 23 innings out of the bullpen. Still, he's going to return immediately to primary closing duties in the Big Apple and needs to be returned to all starting fantasy lineups. Since returning from the injured list on June 13, Diaz has tossed three scoreless innings with two saves and three strikeouts in four appearances. |

Tue Jun 25 2024 | 16:05 | Edwin Diaz Won't Appeal His Suspension |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz is not appealing his 10-game sticky-stuff suspension and will begin serving the suspension on Tuesday night. Diaz will be eligible to return to the Mets' bullpen on July 6 for a contest in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. The 30-year-old right-hander says that he didn't use an illegal substance, but he's not going to bother appealing the suspension and will miss the team's next 10 games. Diaz didn't look like himself earlier this year and then landed on the injured list with a shoulder injury, but he reclaimed the closing gig upon his return and has tossed three scoreless innings with two saves and three strikeouts since returning. With Diaz serving his suspension, the Mets could turn to several pitchers, including Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett, in save situations. |

Mon Jun 24 2024 | 18:53 | Edwin Diaz Officially Suspended 10 Games |
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz has been suspended 10 games for violating the rules on foreign substances. The right-hander was tossed from Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs before ever throwing a pitch. Diaz said afterwards that it was rosin on his hand, but it doesn't sound like he's going to appeal the suspension. The Mets are likely to use a committee approach with Adam Ottavino and Reed Garrett until Diaz is back. |

Mon Jun 24 2024 | 00:59 | Edwin Diaz Tossed For Sticky Substances, Faces 10-Game Ban |
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was ejected from Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs after a routine check for illegal substances. Diaz was about to enter in the ninth inning and was looking to preserve a 5-2 lead and lock down another save before a typical check by the umpiring crew led to him being tossed from the game. The fireballer will now face the automatic 10-game suspension that comes with every sticky stuff ejection. It's a tough loss for both the Mets and Diaz's fantasy owners, who will have to look for alternatives to get into their lineups for saves this week. |

Fri Jun 14 2024 | 09:00 | Edwin Diaz Earns Victory In Return |
In his first outing since returning from the injured list, New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz earned his second victory of the year. Diaz pitched the top of the ninth inning as the Mets were down 2-1 at the time and recorded a strikeout in what was otherwise a clean frame of work. The veteran would be awarded with the victory when outfielder J.D. Martinez hit a walk-off two-run home run off Tanner Scott in the bottom of the ninth inning. Diaz missed the previous 15 games with a shoulder impingement, but looked like his old self on Thursday. Moving forward, Diaz should remain one of the best closer options in the game. |

Wed May 29 2024 | 16:27 | Mets Place Edwin Diaz On Injured List With Shoulder Impingement |
The New York Mets announced on Wednesday that they have placed right-handed reliever Edwin Diaz (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list with a right-shoulder impingement. In a corresponding move, left-hander Josh Walker was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. In his first year back from a knee injury that caused him to miss all of 2023, Diaz has struggled, posting a 5.40 ERA (4.58 FIP), a 1.25 WHIP, five saves, seven walks and 30 strikeouts in 20 innings out of the bullpen. Before landing on the IL, Diaz was temporarily removed from the closer role after a three-outing stretch in which he gave up seven earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while walking three and blowing two saves. He also blew his fourth save in his last appearance against the Giants. It remains to be seen when he'll be able to return to the Mets, let alone be rewarded with save chances again. In the meantime, Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino could both factor into ninth-inning duties. |

Sat May 25 2024 | 12:34 | Edwin Diaz "One Of Our Options" For Saves |
When asked if relief pitcher Edwin Diaz could receive a ninth-inning opportunity on Saturday against the visiting San Francisco Giants, New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, "He's our closer." However, Mendoza also referred to Diaz as "one of our options" and said "we'll piece it together." This comes after the skipper recently said last Sunday that Diaz's bullpen role would be more "fluid" given his recent struggles. The 30-year-old flamethrower allowed a season-high four earned runs on four hits (one homer) in just one-third of an inning last weekend but struck out two in a scoreless inning on Friday against the Giants for his second hold of the year. Diaz has already blown three saves in 2024 and hasn't recorded a save since May 6, but the Mets could work him back into the role if he can settle down and stack a few more good outings together. |

Sun May 19 2024 | 14:19 | Edwin Diaz Could Have Fluid Usage In Bullpen |
New York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz has allowed eight earned runs in his past five innings and is losing his grasp on closing duties in Queens. On Sunday, manager Carlos Mendoza did not commit to a new closer but did describe Diaz's usage as "fluid." He further stated, "He'll do whatever it takes, whether that is pitching in the seventh, the eighth, the ninth-whatever that is losing, winning." These are not encouraging words for fantasy managers, especially with Diaz's recent production. For the short term, Mendoza might give ninth-inning duties to Reed Garrett, who enters Sunday with a stellar 0.78 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, or Adam Ottavino, who carries a 2.95 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. Diaz should still be the clear lead to earn save opportunities this summer but may need to pitch in a set-up role to gain his confidence back. Both Garrett and Ottavino are solid options to add this weekend from the waiver wire if you are desperate for saves. |

Sat May 18 2024 | 22:34 | Edwin Diaz Open To Moving From Closer Role For Mets |
New York Mets closerEdwin Diazsquandered a four-run lead in the ninth inning of Saturday's 10-9 loss in ten innings at the Miami Marlins. Diaz gave up an RBI single toJazz Chisholmbefore allowing a game-tying three-run homer toJosh Bell, who tied the game. After the game, Diaz told SNY that his "confidence is down" and that he would be open to relinquishing the closer's role until he can regain his form. Diaz has five saves this season, but his ERA has zoomed to 5.50 after allowing four home runs in his last 8 1/3 innings. Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino would be next line to handle closer duties for the Mets until Diaz gets back on track. |
