Fri Apr 1816:39Alex Verdugo Hitting Leadoff In Season Debut On Friday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Alex Verdugo will make his season debut on Friday night hitting leadoff against Chris Paddack and the Minnesota Twins. Verdugo was recently called up from Triple-A Gwinnett where he hit for a .751 OPS in 33 PA. The lefty will look to bounce back after having a subpar season for the Yankees in 2024, hitting for just an 83 OPS+. The Braves need all the help they can get in their lineup, which has been underwhelming by their standards and has led to just a 5-13 record. Both lefties and righties have been hitting Paddack well this season, giving Verdugo intriguing opportunity in DFS leagues. Fantasy managers needing outfield help in deeper leagues may want to snag Verdugo off their waiver wire as well.

Thu Apr 1714:12Alex Verdugo Promoted, Bryan De La Cruz Optioned
The Atlanta Braves have recalled outfielder Alex Verdugo from Triple-A Gwinnett. In a corresponding move, the Braves have optioned outfielder Bryan De La Cruz to Triple-A. The Braves inked Verdugo to a minor-league contract earlier in the spring, and he will now make his Atlanta debut. During the first nine games of the Triple-A regular season, Verdugo held a .207/.303/.448 slash line with two long balls. Verdugo had a disappointing campaign in the Bronx last season as he held a .233/.291/.356 line with 13 long balls, which was a stark decline from the .264/.323/.431 line he held during the 2023 campaign. De La Cruz tallied just one extra-base hit during the first 16 games of the MLB season and will look to turn the corner at Triple-A. Verdugo should see ample opportunities in the starting nine with Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) still sidelined.

Mon Apr 1415:28Alex Verdugo Expected To Join Braves This Week
The Athletic's David O'Brien writes that all signs point to outfielder Alex Verdugo joining the Atlanta Braves this week after signing a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the team on March 20. Verdugo hit a three-run homer at Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday and was pulled two innings later, fueling speculation that he'll join the team for their series opener in Toronto against the Blue Jays on Monday. A team official said that the 28-year-old was scheduled for a light day on Sunday, though, after he played all 14 innings of a doubleheader on Saturday. If he doesn't join the Braves in Toronto, Verdugo will likely be with them against the Minnesota Twins this weekend. After missing most of spring training, Verdugo has hit .182 (4-for-22) with a double, two homers, four RBI and a .700 OPS with Gwinnett. When he joins Atlanta, he could see regular playing time with both Jarred Kelenic and Bryan De La Cruz struggling.

Thu Mar 2014:09Alex Verdugo Inks Contract With Atlanta
The Atlanta Braves have signed outfielder Alex Verdugo to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million. Verdugo has been linked to several suitors throughout camp. Fantasy managers should expect Verdugo to have a depth role in the Atlanta outfield. Last season, the 28-year-old posted a .233/.291/.356 slash line across 149 contests with the New York Yankees. He showed a strong eye at the plate, holding a 15.0 percent strikeout rate, but struggled to generate offense with his bat as he posted a modest .302 xwOBA. In addition, Verdugo was an elite defender, as he placed in the 94th percentile in arm strength and 96th percentile in arm value. Fantasy managers should expect Verdugo to compete for starting opportunities in right field while Ronald Acuna Jr.'s (knee) remains sidelined. He will likely operate on the strong side of a platoon in right field alongside Bryan De La Cruz. Verdugo will likely limit the opportunities for Jarred Kelenic, who is also a left-handed bat who posted a low .231 AVG last season.

Sat Mar 813:14Alex Verdugo Patiently Waiting On Free-Agent Market
Free-agent outfielder Alex Verdugo is biding his time on the free-agent market, but time is running out for him to sign with a new team before Opening Day at the end of March. The 28-year-old could be holding out for a better offer that he feels matches his value, but it's also possible that teams just aren't that interested in him after a disappointing season in 2024 with the New York Yankees. Once a former top prospect, Verdugo had a career-worst 83 OPS+ in the Bronx after being acquired in a trade from the division-rival Boston Red Sox. He has not lived up to his prospect hype and slashed .233/.291/.356 with a career-low .647 OPS, 13 home runs and 61 RBI last year. Despite the poor season, the Yankees continued to trot him out there. He went 10-for-48 (.208) in 14 playoff games last fall. A potential reunion went out the window when the Yankees signed Cody Bellinger in free agency.

Tue Jan 709:04Pirates Showing Interest In Alex Verdugo
According to Robert Murray of FanSided.com, the Pittsburgh Pirates have shown interest in free-agent outfielder Alex Verdugo. While Murray did not indicate how strong the interest was, Verdugo would likely have an everyday role in right field if he joins the Pirates. Last season with the Yankees, the 28-year-old had a disappointing performance, as he held a .233/.291/.356 slash line, which was the lowest of his career. He hit 13 home runs and swiped two bags. While he did not hit the ball hard, he continued to show a great eye at the plate with a 15.0% strikeout rate and 15.5% whiff rate, which were both significantly above the average marks. He has also been an excellent defender throughout most of his career. Currently, Nick Yorke is slated to be the starting right fielder in the Steel City.

Sun Oct 6 202412:39Alex Verdugo Tallies Game-Winning RBI On Saturday
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo went 2-for-3 with two singles, two runs, and a walk in their Game 1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Verdugo tallied his two runs off a Gleyber Torres home run in the third inning and an Austin Wells single in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Verdugo knocked a single to left field, which scored Jazz Chisholm Jr. to put the Yankees in the lead. Rookie Jasson Dominguez was in danger of taking Verdugo's starting role in left field, but given this performance, he should continue to see most of the opportunities there throughout the playoffs. Despite the strong outing, the 28-year-old is best to fade in DFS on Monday when he will face Kansas City southpaw Cole Ragans.

Fri Oct 4 202422:46Alex Verdugo To Start In Left Field In Game 1 Of ALDS
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo will start in left field for the Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday at Yankee Stadium against the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Michael Wacha, according to league sources. There was some question as to whether it would be Verdugo or young outfielder Jasson Dominguez starting in left field to open the playoffs for the Bombers. Verdugo hit .233/.291/.356 with a below-average .647 OPS, 13 homers, 61 RBI and 74 runs in 559 at-bats in his first year in the Bronx. He hit .234 (15-for-64) with two homers, seven RBI, four walks and eight strikeouts in 19 games in September to close out the regular season. Verdugo has faced Wacha 11 times in his career, picking up three hits (one double) with a walk and a strikeout. He'll likely be slotted near the bottom of the Yankees' batting order on Saturday.

Fri Sep 27 202401:54Alex Verdugo Hits 14th Homer In Big Win
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo launched a pinch-hit homer in a blowout victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Verdugo didn't start the game, but came in as a pinch-hitter for Jasson Dominguez late in the game and took advantage of the opportunity. The lefty has seen his playing time dwindle lately due to poor performance and the depth of the Yankees outfield. Verdugo will have a hard time cracking the lineup for the postseason and will likely be a bench option. The same can be said for the 2025 season, causing his fantasy value to tank.

Mon Sep 9 202422:25Alex Verdugo Likely To Be The Odd Man Out
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo made the start in left field while batting ninth on Monday in the series opener at Yankee Stadium against the visiting Kansas City Royals, but it seems likely that he's going to be the odd man out in New York's outfield with prospect Jasson Dominguez being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. Manager Aaron Boone said that Aaron Judge will be in center field on most days, with Giancarlo Stanton serving as the designated hitter, as expected. The Yankees didn't call up Dominguez to ride the pine at the big-league level, so he will most likely take over regular duties in left field and send Verdugo to the bench more often than not. Verdugo did go 2-for-4 with his 12th homer of the year in the 10-4 win over the Royals on Monday, but he came into the contest with a .235/.295/.356 slash line with a below-average .651 OPS in 519 at-bats in 2024.

Wed Aug 7 202414:01Alex Verdugo Back In Leadoff Spot For Game 1 Of Doubleheader
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo (undisclosed) is back in left field and is batting leadoff for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Wednesday against the visiting Los Angeles Angels and right-hander Davis Daniel. The Yankees held Verdugo out of the lineup on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays because he was banged up, but he's back in action on Wednesday in a great matchup. The 28-year-old left-handed hitter is still looking for his first hit in August and has gone 12-for-55 (.218) with no homers, five doubles, four RBI, six walks and 12 strikeouts in 14 games played since the All-Star break. While Verdugo has been pretty inconsistent in the Bronx, he's been much better against righties, batting .240 (72-for-300) against them with eight of his 10 home runs on the year.

Sun Aug 4 202414:18Alex Verdugo Dealing With Undisclosed Injury
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo (undisclosed) is feeling a "little beat up" according to Yankee skipper Aaron Boone. This is why the 28-year-old was kept out of Sunday's starting nine. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports that Boone did not get into any specifics and simply said the outfielder is "all right." For now, fantasy managers should consider Verdugo day-to-day entering the start of the week. This afternoon, Aaron Judge shifted to left field, which opened center field up for Trent Grisham. If Verdugo were to miss any extended period of time, Grisham is the most likely candidate to see an uptick in playing opportunities.

Wed Jul 10 202416:31Alex Verdugo Hitting Leadoff, Ben Rice Moved To Cleanup
The New York Yankees are shuffling their batting order a bit for Wednesday's contest against the hosting Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Zach Eflin. Outfielder Alex Verdugo will take over the leadoff spot, while rookie first baseman/catcher Ben Rice drops from leadoff to the cleanup spot behind slugger Aaron Judge. Rice has held his own in his first 19 major-league games for the Bombers, slashing .267/.348/.567 with a .914 OPS, five home runs, three doubles, 14 RBI and nine runs scored in 69 plate appearances. As long as he continues to hit like that, he'll play regularly at first with Anthony Rizzo out with a fractured forearm. Verdugo has hit 10 long balls in 335 at-bats while driving in 45 and scoring 42 runs. The 28-year-old will have more fantasy appeal atop the order, but it's unclear if this is more of a temporary or permanent move.

Fri Jun 21 202416:18Alex Verdugo Sitting Against Tough Left-Hander
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo will take the day off on Friday with the team facing the visiting Atlanta Braves and left-hander Chris Sale. Verdugo will be replaced by Jahmai Jones, who will start in left field and bat fifth for the Yankees against Braves left-hander Chris Sale. Verdugo is hitting just .211 (15-for-71) with two of his nine home runs, 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in 84 plate appearances against southpaws in 2024. He's also gone 5-for-29 (.172) with a homer, double, four RBI and three strikeouts in his last seven games, so he could use a day off. Jones has only played in 21 games in his first year in the Bronx and is hitting .188 (3-for-16) with a homer, RBI and stolen base. DFS managers will probably want to avoid Jones against Sale on Friday's slate.

Sat Jun 15 202400:21Alex Verdugo Smacks Home Run In Return To Boston
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo had a nice homecoming in Boston on Friday night where the lefty went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, four RBI, and a run scored in an 8-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Verdugo smacked a two-run home run in his first at-bat in his return to Fenway and followed that with an RBI double in the fifth inning and an RBI single in the ninth inning. Verdugo has been scorching-hot over the last week with four multi-hit games with a .355 batting average while driving in seven runs. Verdugo has been excellent hitting cleanup for the Yankees this season and will look to continue his hot June against the Red Sox the rest of this weekend with the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves heading to New York next week.

Wed May 8 202400:43Alex Verdugo Homers, Plates Four Tuesday
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo played his part in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Astros. Verdugo went 3-for-5 with two singles, a three-run home run, and four RBI. The 27-year-old has brought more pop than expected and is slashing .275/.362/.450 with five HR and 17 RBI in 141 plate appearances. His fantasy value would be boosted if he continues to hit for power and average in a strong lineup.

Thu May 2 202412:21Alex Verdugo Back From Paternity List
The New York Yankees reinstated outfielder Alex Verdugo from the paternity list on Thursday and optioned catcher Carlos Narvaez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. Verdugo is back in Thursday's lineup after missing the last three games. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter is starting in left field and is batting sixth against Baltimore Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish, who is making his season debut for the O's. He'll return to face a pitcher that he's had some pretty good success against, as he's hit .368 with an .894 OPS and three RBI in 19 career at-bats against Bradish. In his first 101 at-bats with the Yankees, Verdugo has 27 hits (four home runs), 13 RBI, one stolen base and 17 runs scored in 29 contests.

Mon Apr 29 202414:10Alex Verdugo Placed On Paternity List
The New York Yankees placed outfielder Alex Verdugo on the paternity list ahead of their four-game set against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Verdugo will now miss between one to three games as he welcomes a new baby into the world. That means the latest we can expect the left-handed slugger back is Thursday in the team's series finale. The Yankees will surely miss his bat in the lineup for the next couple of days, considering he is hitting .267 with four home runs, 13 RBI, and six doubles through 29 games this year. But he should be back later this week for your fantasy teams. In his place, New York called up catcher Carlos Narvaez.

Wed Mar 6 202412:44Alex Verdugo Playing On Wednesday
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo (leg) returned to the team's Grapefruit League game on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays and was starting in left field while batting seventh in the lineup. Verdugo was hit by a pitch on his left leg last Saturday and was scratched from the spring game on Sunday as a result. It was a minor injury, so the 27-year-old left-handed hitter should be just fine for Opening Day on March 28. He comes to the Bronx in 2024 after a trade from the division-rival Boston Red Sox and is expected to serve as the Yankees' starting left fielder. Verdugo has gone 1-for-8 with a double and three strikeouts so far in camp, and his fantasy stock is down after slashing .264/.324/.421 with 13 home runs, 54 RBI and five steals in 142 games in his final season in Boston in 2023. He just hasn't shown enough power or speed production to be of much use in mixed fantasy leagues.

Sun Mar 3 202413:22Alex Verdugo Scratched With Leg Contusion
New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo (leg) was scratched from Sunday's Grapefruit League lineup on Sunday with a left-leg contusion that he suffered when he was hit by a pitch on Saturday. Verdugo is just dealing with a bruise, so it's nothing serious. The 27-year-old should be able to return to the team's spring training lineup in a day or two. Consider him day-to-day for now. The Yanks acquired Verdugo via trade from the Red Sox this offseason. He's proven to be a mediocre hitter the last couple years in Boston, but perhaps the change of scenery to the Bronx will invigorate him offensively. Verdugo didn't hit the ball very hard in 2023 and has been merely average in the power and speed departments, giving him limited fantasy upside for outfield depth in deep-mixed leagues.
