Thu Feb 6 | 14:33 | Pierce Johnson Will Have Bigger Role In 2025 |
Atlanta Braves right-handed reliever Pierce Johnson will be relied on even more in 2025 with Joe Jimenez (knee) expected to miss most of the season after having knee surgery last October. Johnson split primary setup duties in Atlanta's bullpen last year with Jimenez, but he should be the primary late-inning setup man in front of closer Raisel Iglesias now. The 33-year-old has a mid-90s fastball but leans heavily on his curveball -- 72 percent of his offerings in 2024 were curves, the highest rate in baseball among pitchers with 10 or more outings. The former first-round pick of the Chicago Cubs went 6-6 last year in his first full season with Atlanta, posting a 3.67 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, two saves, 67 strikeouts and 25 walks in 56 1/3 innings pitched. Johnson's stock will rise in deep holds leagues. |

Fri May 17 2024 | 21:55 | Pierce Johnson Expected Back Saturday |
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Pierce Johnson (elbow) is expected to be activated off the 15-day Injured List on Saturday. Johnson had been dealing with elbow inflammation and was placed on the 15-day IL on May 4th. The 33-year-old threw a bullpen session on Wednesday that went well and the Braves will be ecstatic to have him back. Johnson had been performing at his dominant norms, showing off a 32.0% K% and a 1.25 WHIP, before dealing with elbow inflammation. The Braves have a stretch of 17 games over 17 games so Atlanta will need the bullpen arms to get through that stretch. Fantasy managers should be ready to have Johnson active in their lineups. If he happens to be available on the waiver wire then fantasy managers should snatch him up immediately. |

Mon Apr 8 2024 | 01:45 | Pierce Johnson Fills In Nicely On Sunday |
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Pierce Johnson notched his first save of the season on Sunday in a 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Johnson threw a scoreless ninth, allowing just a hit. Usual closer Raisel Iglesias wasn't available in this one after pitching the previous two days, so Johnson was used to fill in. The 32-year-old appears to be second in line for save chances in Atlanta and should get his fair share of holds as well, making him a good player to have in saves-plus-holds leagues. |

Thu Oct 26 2023 | 17:23 | Pierce Johnson Signs Two Year Deal With Braves |
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Pierce Johnson agreed to stay put for the next two seasons, agreeing to a contract Wednesday. The contract is worth $14.25 million for 2024 and 2025, with a $7 million club option for 2026, that includes a $250,000 buyout. Johnson started 2023 with the Colorado Rockies but was traded to Atlanta and became one of their most important bullpen pieces during their playoff run. A 6.00 ERA in Denver and 4.54 FIP were uninspiring, but the 32-year-old pitched to the tune of a 0.76 ERA for the Braves, striking out 32 of the 89 batters he faced. |

Mon Jul 24 2023 | 12:04 | Braves Acquire Pierce Johnson From Rockies |
The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran relief pitcher Pierce Johnson from the Colorado Rockies on Monday in exchange for right-handed pitching prospects Victor Vodnik and Tanner Gordon. Johnson has struck out 58 hitters in 39 relief innings this year in Colorado, but he's also a poor 1-5 record, 6.00 ERA (4.57 FIP), 1.85 WHIP and 25 walks. The 32-year-old can definitely rack up the strikeouts, but that's about all he'll give fantasy managers in deeper leagues. Johnson had his first 13 saves for the Rockies this year as well, but you won't be able to count on anymore saves the rest of the way now that he's in Atlanta. Raisel Iglesias is firmly entrenched as the Braves' current closer. |

Wed Jun 14 2023 | 09:04 | Pierce Johnson Records The Save Tuesday |
Colorado Rockies reliever Pierce Johnson grabbed the save on Tuesday when his team beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6 in 10 innings. He came into the game with one out in the 10th and retired the only two batters he faced while striking out one. Johnson's had a rough campaign thus far, posting a 6.92 ERA and 1.85 WHIP with 35 strikeouts and 18 walks across 26 innings of work. The right-hander now has 12 saves on the season, but manager Bud Black announced a few days ago that he was no longer the closer. Fantasy managers can drop Johnson in all leagues and pick up Justin Lawrence or Daniel Bard, who will likely share save opportunities going forward. |

Fri Jun 9 2023 | 18:05 | Pierce Johnson Removed From Closer Role |
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Pierce Johnson has been officially removed from the closer role, according to manager Bud Black. The right-hander has been struggling lately, so it's not surprising that the Rockies have decided to make a change. This season, Johnson holds a 7.50 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, with 33/17 K/BB ratio across 24 innings of work. During this time, right-hander Justin Lawrence has basically taken over the closer role in Colorado. However, Black didn't name Lawrence the closer, but said him and Jake Bird would be in the mix for saves. Fantasy managers should wait and see how this situation shakes out. |

Thu Jun 1 2023 | 22:22 | Pierce Johnson Blows First Save In 2023 |
Colorado Rockies reliever Pierce Johnson (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 2/3 of an inning during Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was tagged with the loss and charged with his first blown save of the season. The 32-year-old surrendered a double to Ketel Marte and allowed a walk-off base hit to Corbin Carroll. Johnson owns a 6.85 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts over 22 1/3 innings. Johnson has struggled recently and could be losing his grip on Colorado's closer gig. The Rockies could turn to Daniel Bard or Brad Hand for future save opportunities if Johnson continues to struggle. |

Fri May 26 2023 | 02:51 | Pierce Johnson Blows Four-Run Lead Against Marlins |
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Pierce Johnson got lit up on Thursday, allowing four earned against the Miami Marlins. Johnson came into the game in the ninth and allowed four hits and a walk before being mercifully removed after recording only two outs. Technically this wasn't a blown save as it wasn't a save opportunity when he was called upon, but that might just make it worse. Johnson has been awful for most of the season, with a disastrous 6.53 ERA and 1.89 WHIP, but he somehow hasn't blown a save yet. Still, it seems like the Rockies could do better, especially with former closer Daniel Bard pitching to a 0.69 ERA. Be on the lookout for a change soon if Johnson's performance doesn't improve. |

Thu May 18 2023 | 09:04 | Pierce Johnson Up To Eight Saves After Wednesday's Game |
Colorado Rockies reliever Pierce Johnson earned his eighth save of the season when he closed out Wednesday's 11-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. He came into the game with one out in the ninth inning and three men on base, but the 32-year-old didn't allow a run to score while striking out a batter. Johnson owns a 5.29 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, 29.6% strikeout rate, and 14.8% walk rate over 17 innings but remains the closer in Colorado, even with 2022 closer Daniel Bard out pitching the former with a 0.96 ERA. The former San Diego Padre should be rostered in all formats, but if he eventually loses the ninth-inning role, he has almost no value. |

Wed May 10 2023 | 21:34 | Pierce Johnson Records Sixth Save |
Colorado Rockies right-hander Pierce Johnson recorded his sixth save of the season in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Johnson faced five batters in the ninth and struck out two while allowing a double and a walk. Despite a 4.40 ERA in 2023, Johnson has been effective at the closer role and currently leads the team in saves. He has pitched 14 1/3 innings while striking out 22 batters along with a 1.74 WHIP. He also owns a 31.7% K rate and a 12.7% walk rate. Once Daniel Bard went on the IL, Johnson immediately filled in as the interim closer. Although Bard has been reinstated, Johnson has played a critical role in high-leverage situations. He is an under-the-radar waiver wire pickup for leagues that account for saves. |

Wed May 3 2023 | 00:07 | Pierce Johnson Earns Fourth Save Of Season Tuesday |
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Pierce Johnson picked up his fourth save of the season in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Brewers. Johnson came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by one. He got the first out on a lineout, allowed a ground-rule double, got the second out on a groundout which advanced the tying run to third, and ended the game with a strikeout. The 31-year-old has done a decent job filling in as interim closer, converting all of his save opportunities with a 3.97 ERA, 13.50 K/9 rate, and 5.56 BB/9 rate. Daniel Bard is now back with the team and will likely be eased back into the closer's role, but it appears that Johnson is still the go-to should the Rockies find themselves in a save situation. The ERA and walks aren't great, but he is still worth a roster spot in deeper roto leagues at this time. |

Sun Apr 9 2023 | 19:25 | Pierce Johnson Records Third Save |
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Pierce Johnson has done a solid job filling in for Daniel Bard (personal) who is currently on the injured list. Johnson was called upon to hold a one-run lead against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The right-hander allowed one walk, but was able to shut the door and record his third save of the season. It appears the Rockies are going to continue riding with Johnson at closer until Bard returns. That being said, Johnson should be rostered in all fantasy formats where saves matter. |

Thu Apr 6 2023 | 21:53 | Pierce Johnson Records Second Save On Thursday |
Colorado Rockies right-hander Pierce Johnson earned his second save of the season on Thursday, closing out the 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. He pitched a clean ninth inning with no baserunners and recorded a pair of strikeouts. Johnson is the only arm on the staff with a save under his belt and now owns a 3.00 ERA with a 54% strikeout rate over three innings of work. With Daniel Bard (anxiety) out for the time being, fantasy managers should expect the 31-year-old to be the main man coming on for the ninth inning until the former returns. |

Sun Apr 2 2023 | 08:14 | Pierce Johnson Earns Save On Friday |
Colorado Rockies right-hander Pierce Johnson threw a scoreless ninth inning to nail down a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday. Johnson allowed one hit and struck out two in the frame to pick up his first save of the 2023 season. The veteran reliever picked up three swinging strikes and a 42% CSW on 19 pitches in the inning of work. Johnson is expected to split the save chances for the Rockies with Dinelson Lamet and Brad Hand but he is worth a look in deeper leagues for fantasy managers looking for saves. |

Tue Dec 13 2022 | 19:55 | Rockies Reach Deal With Pierce Johnson |
The Colorado Rockies agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with right-hander Pierce Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson will help bolster the team's right-handed relief corps. The 31-year-old went to high school in Colorado before going to Missouri State and becoming a first-round selection by the Cubs in 2012. He posted a 5.02 ERA with 21 strikeouts and eight walks in 14 1/3 relief innings for the San Diego Padres. Johnson was out from late April until September due to right-elbow tendonitis. In five big-league seasons, he has gone 10-9 with a 4.05 ERA in 140 appearances. Johnson held a key role with the Friars in 2020 and 2021, going 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 104 K's and 36 walks in 78 2/3 frames. He won't have much fantasy value, if any, in most leagues. |

Thu Aug 18 2022 | 22:02 | Pierce Johnson Set For Rehab Assignment |
San Diego Padres pitcher Pierce Johnson (elbow) is traveling to Peoria on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment with the team's rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate. He has been sidelined since April 22 due to right elbow tendinitis. The 31-year-old owned a 4.50 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts over six innings in 2022. Barring any setback, he could return to San Diego's bullpen in September. Johnson could be used in a high-leverage role for the Padres once he's officially activated and is someone to monitor in leagues that reward the category saves and holds. |

Fri Apr 22 2022 | 18:46 | Pierce Johnson Heading To The Injured List |
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Pierce Johnson (elbow) will be placed on the 10-day injured list with elbow tendinitis. The team is calling up left-handed pitcher Ray Kerr to fill his roster spot. Johnson has been one of the Padres' top setup men early on this year with appearances in six games. He had a disastrous inning against the Atlanta Braves last Friday, allowing three earned runs and taking the loss for the game. However, outside that appearance, he's pitched five scoreless innings while compiling five holds. |

Fri Nov 5 2021 | 15:31 | Padres Exercise Options on Pierce Johnson, Craig Stammen |
The San Diego Padres announced several roster decisions on Friday, exercising their contract options on relief pitchers Pierce Johnson and Craig Stammen and declining their contract options on outfielder Jake Marisnick and relief pitcher Keone Kela. Johnson and Stammen return to an excellent bullpen in 2022, one that may not feature Mark Melancon after the veteran right-hander chose to enter free agency. That leaves the closer role open, and while Emilio Pagan and Drew Pomeranz should have the inside track on the job, it would not be shocking for Johnson or Stammen to find themselves in some higher leverage situations. |

Tue Aug 24 2021 | 18:35 | Pierce Johnson Opening Tuesday Against Dodgers |
San Diego Padres reliever Pierce Johnson will open Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 48 appearances this season, the right-hander has gone past one frame just once, so he'll likely be followed by some combination of relievers Craig Stammen, Miguel Diaz, Reiss Knehr and Nabil Crismatt. The 30-year-old Johnson has been serviceable out of the Friars bullpen, registering a 2.49 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while fanning 60 batters across 43 innings. But as a middle reliever, he holds minimal fantasy value. |
